Frostwire and Frostclick present Mike Schpitz “Spring Cleaning”

I know it seems like I just dropped my mixtape, The Prize Package Volume 1 but I got the opportunity to link with Frostwire and Frostclick to do an exclusive mixtape for their site and their torrent downloading program. If you recall, back in 2009, Frostwire and Frostclick featured my debut album, Sunday Drive and it received A LOT of love and over 81,000 downloads. So, when they asked me about doing an exclusive project, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity and had to show the love back. This time, I put together a mixtape called Spring Cleaning, which features 19 tracks of old and new material from each of my projects since Sunday Drive. I have songs from Love Potion Number 9th, Mike Murder, Stanley Ipkiss, The Prize Package Volume 1, Sunday Skool with Pete Sayke and Have You Seen My Stapler? with SLOT-A. It is basically a history lesson about my music and has some new, unheard stuff. Spring Cleaning went live yesterday so, go over to Frostwire and Frostclick to download it. The link is below as well as the track list and a snippet of the post on Frostclick.com

Mike Schpitz Interview With Splash! Topeka

With The Prize Package Volume 1 dropping tomorrow, I wanted to share an interview that I just had with frequent collaborators, Splash! Topeka.  As always, the hometown love was in full effect.  This time, Splash! got some low down about my favorite spots in Topeka as well as more information about The Prize Package itself.  Check out a little portion of the interview below and the full thing at Splash! Topeka.

Mike Schpitz’s “Prize Package” on Splash! Topeka

Rapper Mike Schpitz has been making a name for himself on the Chicago rap scene, but he hasn’t forgotten his hometown roots. The Topeka native is paying homage to the city where he grew up with the release of his latest project - The Prize Package Vol. 1. Named for the quirky little burger joint at 1420 SE 6th Ave., Schpitz thought the title perfectly captured the diverse nature of the tracks collected for his new release.

“Basically, it’s a compilation of songs and features on other people’s songs that I’ve done pretty much in the past two years. They weren’t a part of any of the projects I’ve released like Sunday Drive,Love Potion and Stanley Ipkiss, but I still wanted to put the music together so people could download pretty much all of the other stuff I’ve done. Now it’s all in one place. It seemed kind of logical to call it The Prize Package – just a bunch of songs that aren’t specifically made to be together, but put together like an actual mixtape. Twenty-one tracks – it’s a pretty cool project. It will be available March 30 on DJBooth.net. They’ll have a page with the tracklist, production credits – all of that stuff. Just check it all out – you can actually stream it before you download it.”

As always, BIG shout out to Splash! Topeka for the continued love and support.  The Prize Package Volume 1 drops tomorrow.  Stay tuned.

Last week got a little hectic with SXSW going on so, we held off on last week’s leak until last night.  My new record, Do It Right featuring SLOT-A, premiered on DJBooth.net last night to some warm reception.  This is one of my favorite records, if not my favorite record from The Prize Package Volume 1.  I heard Madlib’s track, Stormy from his project Shades Of Blue and fell in love with it.  I knew right away I needed to borrow the record for my own personal use.  I sent the record to SLOT-A and had him rearrange it a little, he came back with a dope hook and verse.  I wrote my two verses and it was a wrap.  Do It Right was finished.  Still to this day, this is one of my favorite records that myself and SLOT have created.  BIG shout out to SLOT on the hook and first verse.  Hopefully by now, you all know The Prize Package Volume 1 is going to drop next week on March 30th.  Until then, Do It Right.

Mike Schpitz Exclusive Interview with Keeynote.com

Q: On “Going For Broke” you say “I gave up a lot more for the game I chose”. What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve made to further your music career?

A: I would say the biggest sacrifice, especially as an “underground, unsigned, up and coming, indie, etc” artist is the investment that you have to make. I personally have invested so much time, energy, emotion and of course money.  It’s hard to continuously invest all that and see little in terms of reward.  It all makes it worth it when you rock a show and people love it or you meet people who love the music but it really is an every day struggle.  The making music part is the easy part for me.  It’s everything else that becomes draining. I think most emcees and artists feel like they are good at what they do or else they wouldn’t be doing it.  Believing that your good, you feel some sort of disappointment when things don’t take off the way you had hoped or expected.  Not everyone blows up overnight so the continual investment of everything you got is hard.  It is a grind.  I think just sacrificing my time, energy and emotions has been the hardest.  When you want something so bad, you gotta put that first and a lot of times it doesn’t always work well with real life.  I think when artists talk about relationships and friends, etc, I personally haven’t seen that because I know any relationship is work. I think all of my family and friends understand how important music is to be so they don’t question my motives or decisions.  Just like music, you have to put forth effort into any relationship in order for it to work so, I try to make sure I put that effort out there while still doing music.  Fortunately or unfortunately, I haven’t had to be gone for months on end but hopefully that time is coming.

Q: You’ve been an integral member of the #IllRaps series alongside Slot-A and Neak. How did the series initially come about and what’s your favorite IllRaps song so far?

A: The #illRaps series has been a cool way for us to just make songs with some people around the city.  Neak basically just hit me up one day like “I need you on this illraps joint.  I figured I would get one maybe two songs, now we got like four. I got the chance to work with Rashid Hadee, F.A.B.L.E. and Nida Nasheeda as well as Sincerely Yours, Neak and SLOT-A.  It’s been cool just to hang out with those people and get a feel for them as artists and as regular people.  Everyone has been real cool and so far, we have been able to make some nice stuff.  Everything has pretty much been on the spot writing and creating too.  It’s a cool challenge to try to be able to come up with a verse on the spot.  For me, I always try to outrap everyone so, I try to make sure I bring it.  With the company of those guys, you have to do that though.  I think my favorite #illRaps is probably #WINNING! only because I love my verse. As a whole song, I like Means The World, it just has a great feel to it and I like what Slot, F.A.B.L.E. and Nida did with the hook. Plus working with Rashid Hadee and recording at his spot was cool.

Check out the rest below and shout out to Keeynote.com for the love and support.

5 Things You Need To Know About Mike Schpitz’ “Prize Package” at RefinedHype

Harold’s Prize Package: The Inspiration

“The Prize Package Volume 1″ is inspired by the legendary burger dive, Harold’s Prize Package in Topeka, KS. Not only can you get a tasty double cheeseburger, onion rings, fried okra and a Welches Strawberry, you can get Swisher Sweets, Lottery Tickets, bootleg movies and perhaps some oil for your car. Although it’s only open on weekdays, that greasy brown paper bag is one of the best lunch time meals you can find in Topeka. It’s unassuming white building only adds to its legend causing many passers by to not even notice it at all. Lunchtime is absolutely insane so, it is highly recommended that people call ahead unless the phones are too busy. Then, you just have to wait a while.

6th and Locust: On Location

The artwork for the project was an obvious choice after I came up with the title. I brainstormed with my “art guy,” Heath O’Campo(who also grew up eating Prize Package) and we came up with some ideas about how we wanted the artwork to look. We got together over Thanksgiving break, the day of my Annual Homecoming Reunion show, and took some cool pictures. We went back a few days later to take some more pictures on the weekend so, there weren’t a ton of people and cars crowding the pictures. Lunchtime at Prize Package is pretty insane especially if you don’t call ahead. We made a bad decision that day to not call ahead. We got some great pictures though and of course some great food.

The Prize Package Volume 1: The Back Story and Inspiration

On March 30th, 2011, my new project, The Prize Package Volume 1 will be released via DJBooth.net, RefinedHype.com and YNotMyDream.net. To raise awareness and get everyone up to speed, I wanted to share the inspiration and back story about the project. Below is a detailed description of the project, it’s inspiration and the release schedule. I also included the cover art and track list, which of course, were done by Heath O’Campo. I hope you enjoy.

In the cluttered and ever-changing food industry in Topeka, Kansas, one place has managed to set itself apart from the rest for years with tasty, cheap, greasy food. Located at 6th Ave and Locust St on Topeka’s East Side, Harold’s Prize Package has become a Topeka staple for locals in search of great food. With lunchtime patrons ranging from businessmen and women from Topeka’s bustling downtown to high school students from all over USD 501, Harold’s serves up some of the best burgers and fried foods that can be found anywhere in Northeast Kansas. A typical lunch might include a greasy double cheeseburger, an order of fried okra and a Welch’s Strawberry soda. In addition to one of the best meals in the city, one might also be able to grab some batteries, a package of Swisher Sweets, jumper cables and an advanced copy of Transformers 3. They have a little something for everyone. To pay homage to this legendary burger spot, Mike Schpitz has teamed up with a few of the most important online voices for underground and unsigned artists, DJBooth.net, RefinedHype.com and YNotMyDream.net, to release his compilation mixtape, The Prize Package Volume 1. Volume 1 features 21 tracks of material compiled since 2008. The Prize Package Volume 1 features appearances and production from Adullessence, Dre Dai, Pete Sayke, Papi Jamon, SLOT-A, Ill Brown, Maja 7th, Ta-Ku, THX, LONEgevity and more. Leading up to its release on March 30th 2011, Mike Schpitz will be releasing a song a week for four weeks beginning on March 2nd. Attached are the cover and track list which features Mike Schpitz on location at Harold’s Prize Package. The photos and artwork were all done by Topeka native, Heath O’Campo, who has been responsible for Schpitz’s Sunday Drive, Love Potion Number 9th: The Hangover and Mike Murder. So in spirit of Harold’s, its food and its importance to the Topeka community, please enjoy this dynamic collection of hip hop music compiled by Topeka’s own, Mike Schpitz.

Mike Schpitz and Adullessence Live At The Celtic Fox Video

It was another successful show at The Celtic Fox this year on Thanksgiving Eve.  We had over 125 people come out to support, drink and enjoy some festivities.  All the performers did very well.  Adullessence shut shit down for his first show in a while and of course, I did what I do.  My guy, Malachi was in the house capturing some video for Wheat City Magazine and got some great footage.  He just finished putting together some performance video of both myself and Adullessence rockin the Fox.  Shout out to Wheat City Magazine if you haven’t checked their site, definitely do that.  So, here is my most recent release, performance video from The Celtic Fox featuring Adullessence.  Enjoy.

Stay tuned for more updates about my new project, The Prize Package Volume 1, coming soon…….
