Mike Schpitz Exclusive Interview with Keeynote.com
Q: On “Going For Broke” you say “I gave up a lot more for the game I chose”. What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve made to further your music career?
A: I would say the biggest sacrifice, especially as an “underground, unsigned, up and coming, indie, etc” artist is the investment that you have to make. I personally have invested so much time, energy, emotion and of course money. It’s hard to continuously invest all that and see little in terms of reward. It all makes it worth it when you rock a show and people love it or you meet people who love the music but it really is an every day struggle. The making music part is the easy part for me. It’s everything else that becomes draining. I think most emcees and artists feel like they are good at what they do or else they wouldn’t be doing it. Believing that your good, you feel some sort of disappointment when things don’t take off the way you had hoped or expected. Not everyone blows up overnight so the continual investment of everything you got is hard. It is a grind. I think just sacrificing my time, energy and emotions has been the hardest. When you want something so bad, you gotta put that first and a lot of times it doesn’t always work well with real life. I think when artists talk about relationships and friends, etc, I personally haven’t seen that because I know any relationship is work. I think all of my family and friends understand how important music is to be so they don’t question my motives or decisions. Just like music, you have to put forth effort into any relationship in order for it to work so, I try to make sure I put that effort out there while still doing music. Fortunately or unfortunately, I haven’t had to be gone for months on end but hopefully that time is coming.
Q: You’ve been an integral member of the #IllRaps series alongside Slot-A and Neak. How did the series initially come about and what’s your favorite IllRaps song so far?
A: The #illRaps series has been a cool way for us to just make songs with some people around the city. Neak basically just hit me up one day like “I need you on this illraps joint. I figured I would get one maybe two songs, now we got like four. I got the chance to work with Rashid Hadee, F.A.B.L.E. and Nida Nasheeda as well as Sincerely Yours, Neak and SLOT-A. It’s been cool just to hang out with those people and get a feel for them as artists and as regular people. Everyone has been real cool and so far, we have been able to make some nice stuff. Everything has pretty much been on the spot writing and creating too. It’s a cool challenge to try to be able to come up with a verse on the spot. For me, I always try to outrap everyone so, I try to make sure I bring it. With the company of those guys, you have to do that though. I think my favorite #illRaps is probably #WINNING! only because I love my verse. As a whole song, I like Means The World, it just has a great feel to it and I like what Slot, F.A.B.L.E. and Nida did with the hook. Plus working with Rashid Hadee and recording at his spot was cool.
