With The Prize Package Volume 1 dropping tomorrow, I wanted to share an interview that I just had with frequent collaborators, Splash! Topeka.  As always, the hometown love was in full effect.  This time, Splash! got some low down about my favorite spots in Topeka as well as more information about The Prize Package itself.  Check out a little portion of the interview below and the full thing at Splash! Topeka.

Mike Schpitz’s “Prize Package” on Splash! Topeka

Rapper Mike Schpitz has been making a name for himself on the Chicago rap scene, but he hasn’t forgotten his hometown roots. The Topeka native is paying homage to the city where he grew up with the release of his latest project - The Prize Package Vol. 1. Named for the quirky little burger joint at 1420 SE 6th Ave., Schpitz thought the title perfectly captured the diverse nature of the tracks collected for his new release.

“Basically, it’s a compilation of songs and features on other people’s songs that I’ve done pretty much in the past two years. They weren’t a part of any of the projects I’ve released like Sunday Drive,Love Potion and Stanley Ipkiss, but I still wanted to put the music together so people could download pretty much all of the other stuff I’ve done. Now it’s all in one place. It seemed kind of logical to call it The Prize Package – just a bunch of songs that aren’t specifically made to be together, but put together like an actual mixtape. Twenty-one tracks – it’s a pretty cool project. It will be available March 30 on DJBooth.net. They’ll have a page with the tracklist, production credits – all of that stuff. Just check it all out – you can actually stream it before you download it.”

I have been making my rounds lately with interviews.  A couple weeks ago, I was featured on Fusion Radio with Flying Bee.  That same night, I had my joint, Put Em Down featured on Go Ill Radio with Timbuck 2.  Last week, I had two interviews with people back in Kansas in support of the annual Thanksgiving Eve Show coming up.  Splash Topeka just posted a feature/interview with me about the show, my current release schedule and what I have been doing in the last few months.  Check out an excerpt from the interview below as well as the link to the full interview AND the official Celtic Fox Annual Thanksgiving Eve Takeover concert.  Shout out to Heath O’Campo for the flier.

The last time we talked, you said Thanksgiving shows were a tradition for you.

It’s actually the third year in a row we have done the night before Thanksgiving or I think seven years in a row we’ve done either a Christmas or Thanksgiving show in Topeka, which is just like a crazy reunion when everyone’s back. It always turns out really, really big. Parents don’t stay up too late, so usually we have the show when parents go to bed and the kids that are back in town – anywhere from 18 to 40 years old – always show up for the show. Last year, we actually did two of them over Thanksgiving. We did one at McB’s the night before Thanksgiving, and then I think the night after we did one at the Celtic Fox. We thought that if people couldn’t make one they could make the other. It was pretty wild.

You must get quite a turnout, huh?

A lot of people from middle school, from high school, I mean – there’s so many people, and people who don’t even know that I do music. They show up like, ‘What? Mike performs?’ So yeah – it’s all just a really big high school reunion, just a big party.

When you’re anticipating a busy day of eating pumpkin pie and watching football, how do you even begin to work up the motivation to perform a show?

Aw, man. You know, I think it’s the energy of knowing all of my friends and family are back in town for the holidays. I don’t get to come to Kansas much – just because I’m constantly working or whatever. So when I come back, and especially when a lot of people who have moved away from Kansas are back, there’s just an energy and this really positive atmosphere that everyone’s back, everyone’s just having a good time. I think that helps a lot when I see that. I’ve been working so hard this year, so I want to show everyone what’s been going on and what I’ve been working on.

Mike Schpitz Interview With Splash Topeka

In preparation for my new project, Stanley Ipkiss, coming in the next month or so, myself and the guy’s at Block Starz Music have been hitting the ground running and getting in touch with a lot of different people for various interviews, features, etc.  The first of such, is an interview with some of my hometown people, Splash Topeka.  I had an interview last week and the feature just got posted on the site.  Check out my EXCLUSIVE interview with Splash Topeka and learn a little more about me.  Here is a small exerpt as well as the full interview.

The Evolution of Mike Schpitz

Next up from you will be the release of your debut EP on Block Starz Music, slated for release on July 21. How did that come together?

We kept talking a about this project – this little EP I was working on that I really didn’t have any plans for. They were interested in releasing it, so after talking and planning that album, we finally got together a contract so that they could distribute it, promote it, advertise it and put it out there this summer. The EP is called “Stanley Ipkiss: Year of the Nice Guy.

Wait a minute – that names rings a bell. Wasn’t that Jim Carrey’s timid character in the film The Mask – the guy who put on the crazy green tribal mask to act out his wildest fantasies?

That’s exactly it. When I recorded the first song, the EP didn’t have a title. I was working with a producer who sent me a beat and I wrote this song “The Year of the Nice Guy.” We started recording a few more songs, and I couldn’t even tell you how I came up with the title. I just remember Stanley Ipkiss writing the letter to Peggy in the movie called “Nice Guys Finish Last.” And I was like, ‘You know what? That’s a great title for an EP – especially this EP.’ So the title track is “Year of the Nice Guy.” It just kind of came together. We didn’t go into the project with the concept.

How has your musical style evolved over the years, especially after you made the move?

Basically, I kind of started off with sample-heavy, underground backpack, I guess you could call it. I was influenced by several artists who were more mainstream and had kind of a not as serious of an approach or not as personal of an approach to the music. So I kind of tried to combine that stuff together and focused on lyrics and good beats. I want to make it fun, but at the same time, some of the songs have a message. I try to balance it between underground and mainstream.
