Harold’s Prize Package: The Inspiration

“The Prize Package Volume 1″ is inspired by the legendary burger dive, Harold’s Prize Package in Topeka, KS. Not only can you get a tasty double cheeseburger, onion rings, fried okra and a Welches Strawberry, you can get Swisher Sweets, Lottery Tickets, bootleg movies and perhaps some oil for your car. Although it’s only open on weekdays, that greasy brown paper bag is one of the best lunch time meals you can find in Topeka. It’s unassuming white building only adds to its legend causing many passers by to not even notice it at all. Lunchtime is absolutely insane so, it is highly recommended that people call ahead unless the phones are too busy. Then, you just have to wait a while.

6th and Locust: On Location

The artwork for the project was an obvious choice after I came up with the title. I brainstormed with my “art guy,” Heath O’Campo(who also grew up eating Prize Package) and we came up with some ideas about how we wanted the artwork to look. We got together over Thanksgiving break, the day of my Annual Homecoming Reunion show, and took some cool pictures. We went back a few days later to take some more pictures on the weekend so, there weren’t a ton of people and cars crowding the pictures. Lunchtime at Prize Package is pretty insane especially if you don’t call ahead. We made a bad decision that day to not call ahead. We got some great pictures though and of course some great food.

The Prize Package Volume 1: The Back Story and Inspiration

On March 30th, 2011, my new project, The Prize Package Volume 1 will be released via DJBooth.net, RefinedHype.com and YNotMyDream.net. To raise awareness and get everyone up to speed, I wanted to share the inspiration and back story about the project. Below is a detailed description of the project, it’s inspiration and the release schedule. I also included the cover art and track list, which of course, were done by Heath O’Campo. I hope you enjoy.

In the cluttered and ever-changing food industry in Topeka, Kansas, one place has managed to set itself apart from the rest for years with tasty, cheap, greasy food. Located at 6th Ave and Locust St on Topeka’s East Side, Harold’s Prize Package has become a Topeka staple for locals in search of great food. With lunchtime patrons ranging from businessmen and women from Topeka’s bustling downtown to high school students from all over USD 501, Harold’s serves up some of the best burgers and fried foods that can be found anywhere in Northeast Kansas. A typical lunch might include a greasy double cheeseburger, an order of fried okra and a Welch’s Strawberry soda. In addition to one of the best meals in the city, one might also be able to grab some batteries, a package of Swisher Sweets, jumper cables and an advanced copy of Transformers 3. They have a little something for everyone. To pay homage to this legendary burger spot, Mike Schpitz has teamed up with a few of the most important online voices for underground and unsigned artists, DJBooth.net, RefinedHype.com and YNotMyDream.net, to release his compilation mixtape, The Prize Package Volume 1. Volume 1 features 21 tracks of material compiled since 2008. The Prize Package Volume 1 features appearances and production from Adullessence, Dre Dai, Pete Sayke, Papi Jamon, SLOT-A, Ill Brown, Maja 7th, Ta-Ku, THX, LONEgevity and more. Leading up to its release on March 30th 2011, Mike Schpitz will be releasing a song a week for four weeks beginning on March 2nd. Attached are the cover and track list which features Mike Schpitz on location at Harold’s Prize Package. The photos and artwork were all done by Topeka native, Heath O’Campo, who has been responsible for Schpitz’s Sunday Drive, Love Potion Number 9th: The Hangover and Mike Murder. So in spirit of Harold’s, its food and its importance to the Topeka community, please enjoy this dynamic collection of hip hop music compiled by Topeka’s own, Mike Schpitz.

DJBooth.net and RefinedHype.com “1 Year Anniversary” Mixtape

It’s hard to imagine that it has been one year since one of my favorite site’s and biggest supporters, RefinedHype.com first hit the net.   They have been doing incredible things for the entire year including sponsoring two of my projects, Love Potion Number 9th and Mike Murder.  They have managed to carve out their own place in the cluttered world of hip hop websites.  In support of their one year anniversary, RefinedHype.com and DJBooth.net have teamed up for the 1 Year Anniversary Mixtape, which dropped today on DJBooth.  I was fortunate enough to be giving the opportunity to have an exclusive record featured on the tape.  My joint is called One Thing, which is my own take on Freeway and Jake One’s track, One Thing.  Real original I know but the record was TOO dope not to touch it.  So, download the mixtape below, check out my new joint, One Thing and continue to support RefinedHype.com for many more years to come.  Check out the track list below.

Mike Murder

“What up world????? It’s me, I’m back again.  Mike Schpitz on that Mike Murder shit.”

That is a quote you might recognize from the first track, Mike Is Like from my new project, Mike Murder.  After dropping three leaks that were very well received, today, Mike Murder is finally available for download in it’s entirety.  It premiered this morning, exclusively on DJBooth.net and has hit several other sites as well.  I pulled together some of the people who have been very supportive from the jump to sponsor the mixtape.  DJBooth.net, Ballerstatus.com, YNotMyDream.net, RefinedHype.com and PMG Media have all lended their sites and brands to help release and promote Mike Murder.  The usual suspects all assisted with the cover art again.  Dakota Blue Harper is responsible for the pictures and of course Heath O’Campo handled the artwork.  My guy Classick, recorded, mixed and mastered all of the tracks.  So, it is my pleasure to present to you, my third official project, Mike Murder.  Please listen, download, comment and share.

Refined Hype Interview With Mike Schpitz for My City Series

So far, so good with the first leak from Mike Murder.  Mike Is Like dropped Sunday on DJBooth.net and hit everyone else yesterday.  The feedback has been incredible.  My guys over at RefinedHype.com, who are sponsoring Mike Murder, recently conducted an interview with Mike Schpitz aka ME, for their interview series called My City.  I was extra excited about this interview because it gave me a chance to shed a little more light on MY city, which happens to be the capital of Kansas, Topeka.  Check out part of the interview here and the rest only at RefinedHype.com.

My City: Mike Schpitz is Topeka High’s Best……..Rapper……….Ever

RefinedHype: You hail from the rarely hailed city of Topeka, Kansas. Do you feel like some people have a bias towards your work when they find out where you’re from?

Mike Schpitz:. I’m not sure how people feel about me and my music AFTER they actually hear the music and then find out I’m from Topeka but I think it’s safe to assume that not many people are checking for emcees to come out of Topeka, Kansas or any similar town across the country. If they see me and then see where I’m from before hearing the music, I definitely think people automatically write me off. I can’t lie because I would do the same thing. I think once people hear the music it’s a little harder to have that bias. More so than where I’m from, I am finding out that people judge me based on what I look like which for me, is kind of funny because no one expects anything. People are always taken back especially when I hit the stage.

RefinedHype: How do you think your music and career would be different if you lived in a more “major” city like L.A., New York, Atlanta etc.?

Mike Schpitz:. It’s hard to say what I would be doing musically if I was from a more major city. I probably wouldn’t even be doing music. I think it’s probably harder to get respect in bigger cities because you have so many talented people in those cities. In Kansas, there are definitely some talented people but the numbers are way smaller. My influences are drawn from all over too. I think if I was in a bigger city, I am gravitate towards music and sounds from that city or region. It definitely allowed me to be more open to hip hop from all over. Being in Chicago now has helped me really step my game up and go full force. There are so many different artists out here that I have to be able to stand out or I will get lost easily in the crowd. I have taken a lot of aspects of both my hometown, Topeka, Kansas and Chicago and used them in my music.

My City: Mike Schpitz is Topeka High’s Best……..Rapper……….Ever

I’m not sure how true “Topeka High’s Best………Rapper……Ever” is but hopefully I’m top 10.

Mike Schpitz presents Mike Is Like

It has been about six months since my last project, Love Potion Number 9th: The Hangover and almost a year since my debut album, Sunday Drive.  Since the, I have been hard at work on my latest project, Mike Murder.  After receiving warm responses from several “low budget” Mike Murder videos back in 2008, I decided to put together an actuall recorded project titled Mike Murder which features another side of me and my music that may not be as evident when listened to my previous work.  After premiering my new joint, Mike Is Like yesterday on DJBooth.net and receiving some wonderful words, I am making Mike Is Like available for download as the first official leak from Mike Murder.  The music was recorded, mixed and mastered by Classick for Classick Studios.  Dakota Blue Harper took all the pictures and Heath O’Campo did the artwork, which will drop later this month.  Mike Murder is scheduled to release on May 26th, the one year anniversary of Sunday Drive and MikeSchpitz.com.  It is sponsored by DJBooth.net, Ballerstatus.com, YNotMyDream.net, RefinedHype.com and PMG Media.  Please listen, download and spread the word about Mike Is Like and Mike Murder.  I have performed several of these cuts live and people really seem to enjoy them.
