Where Am I????

Redman

It has been quite the eventful weekend with all that was going on in sports, music and pop culture.  First off, shout out to Michael Jordan for being inducted into the basketball hall of fame.  He was clearly the center of attention that night and his acceptance speech, or whatever it’s called, was pretty funny.  He talked a little bit of shit and even joked(I hope) about coming back to play again.  Tiger Woods DOMINATED the FedEx cup this weekend and the VMA’s sucked again.  I’ll save my thoughts on Kanye, Beyonce and Taylor Swift for a separate post today.  I was glad to see Eminem win best male hip hop, even though he didn’t have much competition.  I was also glad to see Lady Gaga win best new artist over Drake, Asher Roth and Kid Cudi.  No offense to anyone but Lady Gaga was the CLEAR winner.  Shout out to Wale for holding it down with his band the whole show.  I’m looking forward to Attention Deficit, I MIGHT even go out an purchase it.  Jay Cutler’s debut was a TRAGEDY.  I am sure the city of Chicago is stirring with disappointment towards the Bears new poster child.  Happy Monday to all.  Tomorrow, I will be releasing the first of two remixes featuring The League of Ordinary Gentlemen.  The Get Up Remix features verses from Add-2 and Adullessence.  Make sure you tune in tomorrow to check it out.  This morning for the drive to work, I took it back to the New Jersey Drive soundtrack.  I have actually never listened to it except for Outkast’s Benz or Beamer, which is a classic cut.  So far, on Volume 1, I am not too attached to any of the songs except for a few.  My favorite aside from Outkast is Redman’s Where Am I?  You can always expect Redman to drop heat especially back in the day.  Dude is one of a kind and is a beast on the mic.  That whole style thing that I always talk about, Redman OWNS that shit.  No one sounds like FunkDoc.  I got about 8 more tracks to listen to on Volume 1 and all of Volume 2 but I like a few songs.  The Heavy D joint is cool and the Queen Latifah joint is pretty ill too.  Once again, Happy Monday to all and make sure you tune in tomorrow for my new joint, The Get Up Remix featuring The League of OG’s.

Da Art of Storytelling

Slick Rick

“Every rapper rap maggot underneath Rick’s feet”

It’s Fly Friday and what better way to match my green polo with a pink horse than one the flyest of all times, the ruler MC Ricky D.  Since I was like 4 when The Great Adventures of Slick Rick came out, my first REAL introduction to Slick Rick came in 1999 with his 4th album, Da Art of Storytelling.  Fresh out of jail and on the heels of his Outkast feature, Rick dropped the single, Street Talkin’ featuring Big Boi and came back stronger than ever.  Da Art of Storytelling became the soundtrack to the summer after my freshman year in high school.  I frequently revisit this album and fall in love with it more every time.  I cross my fingers that Rick can put out ONE more album before he retires.  He is one of the only cats who has managed to stay relevant AND sharp throughout 2 decades while spending stints in prison, battling deportation issues and having released very little material.  When I talk about rappers having their own style and sound, Slick Rick is the epitome of that.  You know it’s Rick every time you hear him spit.  Dude is 44 and is STILL sharp.  What is Jay-Z’s excuse????  Sorry, I just had to throw another rock at the throne.  Wait hasn’t Wayne and Kanye taken over that seat, sitting on each other’s laps?  Da Art of Storytelling has 24 joints with a handful of skits but every track is really dope.  I figure as long as Slick Rick’s music exists, every emcee has something to strive for.  His lyrics and style never get stale.  I haven’t made it through the whole album today but it doesn’t matter which joint I choose because they are all ill, so I’ll start your day the same way Rick starts the album.

West Savannah

Oukast

It’s Friday and only 10 more days left in the month of August.  I’m not even sure where August went but I guess it was good.  I got some great news today but I’ll save them for a seperate post.  After I got done listening to De La Soul yesterday, I put in Outkast’s five mike classic, Aquemini and road home.  Aquemini was the album that really pushed Outkast into the mainstream eye.  The first two classic albums were definitely praised via sales and critical acclaim but Aquemini is the Outkast album that EVERYONE had.  I remember Christmas of 1998, both me and my brother bought this album for each other.  Clearly, the whole album is classic but my joint yesterday and today is West Savannah.  Originally ” A tune composed back on the first album,” West Savannah is an absolutely incredible song.  I’m not really sure why it didn’t make it on to Southerplayalistic.  If Outkast has joints like West Savannah in the stash, I can only imagine how much more incredible material these guys have.  I have this conversation often and with a lot of people but I think it is undisputed that Outkast is the GOAT.  They reinvent themselves every album and receive both critical acclaim and sell a lot of records.  Although a  lot of people sleep on Idlewild, it is a dope ass album.  I let that whole album ride.  I think people were just thrown off by the movie.  I’ll probably switch up Kast later for The Clipse because I’m going to see them at The Metro tonight for Sneakerpimps.  I can’t wait for Til The Casket Drops.  It should be another classic for The Clipse.  Stay tuned for an update on my  music later today.  Happy Friday.  Enjoy some Outkast.  GOATs.

Big Boi Speaks On New Outkast Material

Outkast

I’m not one to just post random interviews with rappers BUT today is a beautiful day.  There has been talk and delays and more talk about new material from Outkast but Big Boi has confirmed that work on the new Outkast album has been started and both he and Dre will release their projects soon.  Imagine what life would be like with 3 new Outkast projects.  Oh yea, new album from Goodie Mob as well as a new Cee-Lo album.  Hopefully all this happens.  My fingers are crossed!!!!!!!

Holiday

Witchdoctor

It’s the middle of the week, I just got paid so I’m feeling like “Everyday is a holiday, another muthafuckin dollar day!!!!!!!!”  I had to listen to one of the dopest money-making anthems of all time(in my opinion), Holiday by the Dungeon Family’s Witchdoctor.  It’s been a LONG, LONG time since I have listened to his album, A S.W.A.T.  Healin Ritual, so I figured today was the perfect day.  Of course Holiday is dope but the rest of the album is really good too.  I think Witchdoctor is an acquired taste but if you are a fan of the DF, then you will definitely enjoy his album.  It’s pretty dark and spiritual but it’s well produced and Witchdoctor is a talented emcee.  Conceptually his records are dope too.  I highly suggest his album.  You can also catch him on ATLiens, Soul Food and Still Standing as well as Dungeon Family’s album Even In Darkness.  Apparently, he has several other albums but the only one that I have heard is The Diary of an American Witchdoctor, which was actually heavily promoted on Comedy Central(kinda strange).  I don’t remember much of the album so I got to revisit that one but in the meantime, check out Holiday and his debut album, A S.W.A.T. Healin Ritual.

My Heart is like a Marching Band

Outkast Idlewild

Top of the Morning ye’ faithfuls.  Another Monday and another week closer to summer, kinda.  Today was a particularly difficult Monday because of the LONG, sleepless weekend filled with beer, shopping, food and watching the sunrise.  This morning my theme song is from arguably(not any argument in my eyes) the greatest hip hop entity of all time, Outkast.  From one of their most slept-on(and hated on) albums/soundtrack, Idlewild, Morris Brown(and the whole album) provided the essential energy boost I needed to get through the long drive to work.  If anyone recalls the video, there were flowers singing, a HUGE Cadillac with a marching band in the trunk and a Janelle Monet looking as strange as always(i love her thoough).  The hook is infectious and exactly why its stuck in my head and Big Boi kills the song as usual.  It is just a really dope, different song that didn’t get the love it should have.  Actually the whole album is really dope.  I don’t skip a track.  I know a lot of people don’t really like it but I think it is as good as Stankonia which is also a little slept-on.  So enjoy Morris Brown today and make sure you relisten to Idlewild.  Andre raps on the album too.  Outkast=GOATs!!!!!!!!!!!

Killer Mike featuring Big Boi “My Chrome”

After taking me a good 25 minutes to figure out how to embedd this darn video into the post, I finally figured it out(sigh of relief).  Taken from Onsmash.com, Killer Mike drops a gem featuring one of the illest, most slept-on MCs ever, Big Boi.  I’m one of those fanss who has supported and continues to support anything Outkast and their affiliates drop.  I still got Backbone and Slimm Cutta Calhoun’s album in the CD booklet.  I know Killer Mike isn’t down with Outkast like that any more but it’s still nice to see old stuff leaking.  Check it out.
