Dancing In The Rain

“And don’t nobody wanna liberate the weight of the pain”

Man, it feels like a new world now that I am free to explore some new and old music.  I am telling you guys, the Gorilla Zoe Challenge REALLY took it out of me.  It’s gonna take months to get back right.  This weekend helped immensely though.  I bumped The Fugees, Lauryn Hill and went to see Blu in concert on Saturday.  This was my first time seeing Blu live after being a huge fan for the last few years.  The show as a whole was pretty dope too.  Chicago emcee, ADad had a really nice set and Tanya Morgan did their thing as well.  The venue was packed by the time Blu came on and he was really dope live.  Despite forgetting some of his words, Blu raps just as well in person as he does in the studio.  He performed with Exile as his deejay, who did some live MPC worked and even performed a couple songs.  I can’t say enough about how good the show was.  If you are not familiar with Blu, liste to his album with Exile, Below The Heavens right now and when he comes to your city, go see him live.  He is one of the most underrated emcees out and one of the nicest dudes period.  After the show, I have been listening too Below The Heavens and Dancing In The Rain really struck a cord with me.  Blu performed this joint live and had everyone in the crowd singing the words.  Dancing In The Rain will fit the Monday vibe very well.  And in case you haven’t seen my video, The Rain, here is a Monday bonus.  Enjoy,

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: The Finale

Today might be the happiest and most proud day of my life.  Not ONLY is it Friday but I have officially accomplished one of the most difficult tasks that I have ever set out to conquer.  For those of you unfamiliar with the Gorilla Zoe Challenge, let me explain it.  I found out that Gorilla Zoe was releasing a new mixtape, every day of the month in February.  I wrote a post called Disposable Arts talking about how the value of music is at an all-time low, etc, etc.  Well, I decided to rather than just jump to conclusions about Gorilla Zoe’s 28 in 29, I would actually listen to every single mixtape that he released.  I got a late start on the Challenge and started on like February 5th and finished exactly a month later, which is today.  I listened to 29 Gorilla Zoe mixtapes all of which had 8-23 tracks.  Thankfully some were duplicates but I can’t lie, I have been depressed the entire month of February.  I am proud to say that I finished the last four yesterday and today.  After thinking about the last month and all the music that I listened to, I stand by my earlier post about Disposable Arts.  I guess hip hop/rap is like anything.  You got to take the good with that bad and take the INCREDIBLE with the horrendous.  So is life.  Anyway, I will be keeping everyone posted on new music, old music and my thoughts now that the GZC is officially over.  So here are the last four mixtapes, The Greatest Zoe on Earth, Shaquille, Zoe’neal, The Might ZOE Young and 8 Track(Finale).

The Greatest Zoe on Earth

Shaquille Zoe’neal

The Might ZOE Young

8 Track (Finale)

I wanted to share a word from Zoe and his camp about the 28 in 28 to put this whole thing intro perspective.

“Well, it’s finally here Day 28 of 28… the FINALE! This is the first time an artist has EVER dropped 28 mixtapes in a month. You all have watched HISTORY and we thank you for being a part of it.”

This is one of those pieces of history I wish could be erased.  Be on the lookout for Gorilla Zoe’s new album.  I can assure you that I will NOT be listening to that.  Thank you are for allowing me this time to participate in such an absurd task.  Now back to our regularly scheduled program…….

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: Day Thirteen

To my own suprise, I have FINALLY caught up with Gorilla Zoe and have listened to ALL 24 days of mixtapes.  Yesterday and today, I made it through 22, 23 and 24.  Now, I’m just waiting on Zoe to drop the 25th today.  22 was called Space Chips, 23 was My Block and 24 was Book of Zoe.  Space Chimps is an absolutely ABSURD cover.  I fucks with Zoe(well his art guy) for that one.  Book of Zoe features some weird rock sample shit.  My Block has a joint with some singer and T.I.  I was surprised to hear that shit.  Shout out to T.I. for being out.  We are all looking forward to new music.  Anyway, here are the 3 latest mixtapes from Zoe.

Space Chimps

My Block

Book Of Zoe

If you can only get to one of these mixtapes, please listen to the intro on My Block from Big Block.  His rant is hilarious.  Apparently, Diddy called him the Diddy of the show.  I’m not sure if that’s a compliment especially after hearing 24 of these mixtapes.

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: Day Twelve

Typically, I would try not to overshadow a new release from myself with music that I am listening to but in the spirit of the GZC and to show the level of commitment I have for the cause, today I am through two more mixtapes, number 18, The Beast Within and number 21, Futuristic Zoo.  I’ll give these two tapes the Forest Gump Treament, “and that’s all I have to say about that.”

The Beast Within

Futuristic Zoo

Sweet cover for Futuristic Zoo huh?????????

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: Day Eleven

I have to apologize for the super late post of the day.  It’s been a hectic day but just to reassure everyone, I am STILL on the GZC.  Today, I went back and caught mixtape number 17, Gorilla Woods Part 2 and jumped forward to mixtape 20, Cartunez.  For whatever reason, number 18 is nowhere to be found.  I guess that means it was too bad to continue to promote it.  Anyway, the end is approaching ever so rapidly.  I have to comment on a trend I have been noticing in rap lately and in particular Gorilla Zoe does it A LOT throughout these tapes.  Rappers have been comparing themselves to shit lately.  Kanye has said things like “How it feels to wake up to be the shit and the urine.” Lil Wayne frequently uses inappropriate bathroom chat as well.  However, Gorilla Zoe has taken it to a new level by saying things like “I doo doo and boo boo and poo poo.”  I’m not sure why this trend continues but I must urge rappers to find more clever ways of saying they are the shit rather than comparing themselves to ACTUALL shit.  Well, enjoy both tapes and trust there will be some classic material coming very soon.  Stay tuned.

Cartunez

The cover work is still kind of hilarious though.

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: Day Ten

I got to be honest with everyone, this morning I ALMOST gave up this GZC because I am noticing that it is taking a toll on me.  I am very uninspired to write my own music and I find my morning drives just SUCKING balls.  However, I pushed on and I think I am recharged.  The end is in sight.  Today, I have officially made it through mixtapes 16 and 19.  I made a mistake and put 19 in this morning instead of 17 but 17 is in the tapedeck as we speak.  The mixtape titles are Walking Money Machine and I Am Zoe Good.  These aren’t quite as entertaining as some of the previous ones so there are really no highlights from either, just more of the same.  If you are STILL sleeping on the 28(29) in 28 days, time to catch up.  Happy Monday to all and hopefully I will be through this challenge by next week.

Walking Money Machine

I Am Zoe Good

I wonder if Gorilla Zoe really is a Walking Money Machine.  Something tells me he is exaggerating a little bit.

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: Day Nine

It’s Day Nine of the Gorilla Zoe Challenge and I am on mixtapes 14 and 15, Stupid Cupid Shawty and Engraved In Stone.  More hilarity from the cover art especially Stupid Cupid Shawty.  As for musical content and quality, it all sounds the same now so providing any real feedback is impossible.  I did hear Zoe jack some Biggie, rap over Katie Perry’s Kiss A Girl and redo “What Is Love?”  I have heard Zoe say on a few different occassions that people thought this 28 mixtape in 28 day thing wouldnt be quality music.  All I could do is shake my head.  I wonder if he is even listening to any of this music???????  Oh well.  Happy Friday to all, TGIF and here are the next two mixtapes, Stupid Cupid Shawty and Engraved In Stone

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: Day Eight

I’m back on those two a days in the GZC.  This time it’s the 12th and 13th mixtapes, I Am Gorilla and Gorilla Ape Shit!!!!!!!  I gotta say, despite the overwhelming amount of garbage on all these tapes, the titles and the cover art is still pretty hilarious.  There is a song on Gorilla Ape Shit, where Zoe starts off talking about pooping and doo dooing on people.  I believe it’s a song called Dough where he dubs himself, Pizza Hut Zoe.  The absurdity of some of these songs is quite amazing.  I highly recommend listening to all 28(29) of these mixtapes.  I started to realize a trend though.  My inspiration level has been at an all time low and I am starting to wonder if it is directly correlated with the nonstop Gorilla Zoe in my tape deck.  Who knows though.   Here are the mixtapes, I Am Gorilla and Gorilla Ape Shit!!!!!! Enjoy

And make sure you Don’t Forget To Flush!!!!!!

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: Day Seven

Yes people, I am still on it and will be until the wheels fall off.  Today, I only bumped the official 11th mixtape, apparently The Connect was the 2nd mixtape from day 10.  This is false advertising if you ask me because now it is 29 mixtapes in 28 days.  Shit, by the time this thing is over it might be 35 mixtapes.  Anyway, the 11th day brings us a hilarious title and another hilarious cover, The Legend of Zoe-Ro.  I really think I am going to purchase all 29 of these absurd things.  As if I needed to say it, Zoe-Ro is still the same old song and dance so, if you liked the first 11, check this one out.  Download it here and Happy Hump Day to all.  I will have 2 more tomorrow and 2 more Friday, I promise.

The Legend of Zoe-Ro

Gorilla Zoe Challenge: Day Six

Today is a SPECIAL day in the Gorilla Zoe Challenge.  The 11th mixtape in the GZC is a project called The Connect which features a few of his cohorts.  One of them is an Italian dude from NYC.  I can’t front, it’s kind of ill to see a white guy doing his thing even if it is in the Gorilla Zoe camp.  This tape has less Gorilla and more of his guys which I can’t say is a good thing but at least it’s a change and change IS good.  I’ll try to keep up with two a days so this challenge doesn’t last forever but for today, enjoy The Connect.
