Erykah Badu “Out My Mind, Just In Time” Music Video
Once again, Erykah Badu’s album, New Amerykah: Return of the Ankh is amazing and she just dropped a video “Out My Mind, Just In Time.” She still amazes me.
Erykah Badu “Fall In Love(Your Funeral)
It’s been kind of a slow week around these parts. I was mainly rehearsing for my show this past Wednesday and getting my house cleaned and set up for new beginnings. Plus, I haven’t listened to much music other than Big K.R.I.T. and some reggae and dancehall. However, today I got a little surprise with a new video of an in-studio performance from Erykah Badu for her song, Fall In Love(Your Funeral). Once again, her most recent album, Return of the Ankh is incredible and you need to hear it. Fall In Love is one of my favorite songs on the album so, I was pleased to see a little visuals for it. Check it out below and Happy Friday.
Erykah Badu “Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long” Music Video
Some amazing things are happening this week. First Damian Marley and Nas video “Patience” and now Erykah Badu drops her video for “Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long.” Her album, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh dropped last year and was one of my favorite albums of the year, well shit, in the past several years too. I loved every song on it. The video is directed by Flying Lotus and is really cool. Check it out below and make sure you listen to her whole album. She is truly amazing.
Teflon Don
I’ve been marinating on Rick Ross’ new album, Teflon Don for about a week. After having several discussions about Ross, his albums, his sound and his whole persona, I came to the conclusion that Ross’ new album, Teflon Don is pretty solid, for a Rick Ross album. I think it is definitely his best work today. The whole project fits pretty nicely together except the HORRIBLE, Diddy and Trey Songz assisted track, Number One. I’m not even sure why that song was ever made let alone put on the album. Having said that, I can ride to most of the album. It is a nice balance of street and soul. I think the most surprising aspect of Teflon Don are the features. He managed to pull together one of the most star studded casts on a single album. Of course artists like Jay-Z, Drake, Kanye West and Gucci Mane make the album but more surprising are Erykah Badu, Cee Lo, Chrisette Michelle and Raphael Saadiq. These artists add an element of credibility to Rick Ross’ music that the normal rap guest features can’t really bring. Of course, I’m not saying that Drake, Kanye and Jay don’t bring credibility but those aren’t surprising features for a rap album, especially someone like Rick Ross. I think Ross is starting to separate himself from the regular rapper by really making an effort to make the music have a soul rather than just drugs, guns, money and women talk. He shows another side of himself with records like All The Money in the World. I was a little surprised to hear that joint. I definitely think Ross is headed in the right direction if he can manage to pull together a few more solid albums. Having said all that, I like the album but I’m still not a Ross fan. Lyrically he has been stepping it up and definitely has his own “thing” but he just doesn’t quite do it for me. My hat is off to Ross though for putting together a solid album. I’ll be checking for his next one for sure. Check out the videos for Super High, BMF(Blowing Money Fast) and Sweet Life which doesn’t make the album.
1. Shout out to Stacy Dash with her beautiful self.
2. Shout out to Styles P
3. I’m not sure if it is a good idea for Rick Ross to keep pissing off drug dealers, first the real Freeway Ricky Ross and now Big Meech. I’m just saying. Check out the album and please share your thoughts.
Worldwide Underground
Ya’ll know what day it is so I bring you some more classic shit to listen to on this lovely Friday afternoon. Last night, I got to see one of my favorite artists, Erykah Badu perform live at the Chicago Theatre. Janelle Monae and N.E.R.D. opened the evening and were both really dope. It was my first time really seeing any of the acts on the bill so, I knew I was in for a treat. By the time Erykah Badu came on, the crowd was super excited and went CRAZY when she came out. She played damn near every song that I wanted to hear and did some amazing renditions of Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and Whodini. She effortlessly flowed from one song to the other and controlled the crowd like no one I had ever seen. She ended the show with Bag Lady, which carried over into her own version of Snoop Dogg’s Ain’t No Fun. Needless to say, I had to listen to some Badu today. I am not as familiar with her albums, Worldwide Underground or New Amerykah Part One so, I wanted to revisit these albums. Right now I have, Worldwide Underground in the tapedeck and I am loving it. My joints are Back In The Day and Woo. If you haven’t seen Ms. Badu live, it needs to be added to your bucketlist closer to the top. Happy Friday to everyone and enjoy some Erykah Badu.
StreetSoul
Happy Friday to all. TGIF. It’s been both a week of sadness and celebration. One of hip hop’s pioneers and legendary emcees, Guru, passed away this week. The whole hip hop community along with family and friends will mourn his passing for a long time but we also should be celebrating his life. He gave a whole community countless albums and records that will stand the test of time. RIP Guru. Today, I am listening to his third installment of the Jazzmatazz series, Streetsoul. This album features some of the most recognizable names from singers, rappers and producers including the late J Dilla, Erykah Badu, DJ Scratch, DJ Premier, Herbie Hancock and The Neptunes. I remember when I first picked this album up after falling in love with Gang Starr’s Moment of Truth. Although, I always preferred Guru of Premo beats, Streetsoul has some really nice tracks on it. I encourgage everyone to revisit Guru’s music in light of his passing. RIP Guru.

Looking at my Gucci it’s about that time. There were no major releases last week to speak of so, no real surprises in the numbers. Erykah Badu is still in the top 10. Ursher is sitting at number 2 and Monica is at number 6. Luda and Blacked Eyed Peas are still sitting up top as well. I’m curious to know WHO keeps buying copies of Black Eyed Peas. Here is the top.

I had NO idea how well the Wu was gonna do but I guess it’s alright. 3 of those copies are still wrapped at my house. I also bought 2 copies of Ms. Badu’s album, which happens to be my favorite album of the year so far. I can’t say I have heard much more than the radio singles for Usher new album but he seems to be doing pretty well. Little Freak featuring Nicki Minah is kind of hot. Stayed tuned until next week. April is certain to have some incredible releases. Little Brother’s album Leftback on the way.
Weekly Numbers 3/31/10
Once again, sorry for the delay on the weekly numbers. I don’t really have a valid excuse other than just forgetting. My sincerest apologies. A couple new albums hit the shelves last week. Monica dropped a new album and is sitting at number 2. Brotha Lynch Hung also dropped and is sitting towards to bottom at 68. Of course, Black Eye Peas are still up top along with Sade who went platinum. Here is the top.
