Weekly Numbers 4/28/10

I have a bit of depressing news this week after seeing some of the soundscan numbers.  Little Brother’s FINAL album as a group moved less than 5K.  Damn.  I thought they had more of a stronghold than that.  Maybe their numbers will go up in the next few weeks.  Anyway, the usual suspects are up top.  I wish I could give you all the numbers from soundscan every week but billboard requires a monthly fee and I don’t want to pay that just to see artists flop.  Check the top.

I must say that it’s nice to see Cypress Hill make a “strong” return with 18K.  Despite having a dope album, Devin The Dude moved just under 7K and Kurupt put out a project too.  I was totally unaware of that.  Anway, until next week………….

Suite 420

Due to Guru’s passing last week, I put off writing about a few new releases for this week.  April saw some pretty decent releases with Little Brother, Murs and 9th Wonder, B.O.B. and Devin The Dude.  After bumping LeftBack for a few days, I put in Devin The Dude’s new album, Suite 420.  It’s been a few years since I’ve heard some new Devin but the single, What I Be On, got me pretty excited for the whole album.  What I Be On is another classic in Devin’s catalog of songs like Doobie Ashtray, Lacville 79 and What A Job.  I checked out the EP a month or so ago and didn’t really realize that a full length was going to follow it up.  After listening to the album a couple times, I was pretty impressed.  It naturally has a weed themed, stoner feel to it but the production is pretty ill and Devin is always entertaining.  Tracks like Where Ya At, We Get High and Still Coming are definitely rewindables.  Devin’s rhymes are always fresh which keeps me listening.  Some of the hooks are great but not unlistenable.  I definitely think this will be one of the more slept-on albums of 2010.  I definitely encourage people to check it out regardless of how big of a Devin fan you might be.  He’s one of the most original cats out and has been consistent for quite some time.  Here is the vide for What I Be On.  I Get this joint stuck in my head at least once a week.

Do Not DistHerb (Suite #420)

“Everybody, got their own niche”

I think that’s what Devin says.  I can’t imagine a better way to start the middle of the work week than with some Devin The Dude.  He recently dropped an EP called Do Not DistHerb (Suite #420), which features the single, What I Be On.  That joint just happens to be my theme song for the last week and a half.  I can’t stop listening to it.  I listned to the whole EP a few times through and it’s not bad.  What I Be On is definitely the best track but Devin’s humor carries almost any song.  The production is pretty solid too.  I wish it was a full lenth album but I guess it’s just a taste of what Devin will offer on his next full lenth.  If you haven’t already heard What I Be On, listen now.  I posted a little bit ago so check that.  I am sure hardcord Devin The Dude fans will really like the project but I am looking for a little bit more.

Devin The Dude “What I Be On” Video

Last night, I was catching up on some videos that have dropped this week and I started watching Devin The Dude’s new video for What I Be On.  I knew Devin was putting out an album but I wasn’t really checking for him like that.  Well, What I Be On is the SHIT.  I think the song has been out for a while but the video came out recently and now I’m hook.  In typical Devin fashion, there is a lot of weed smoke and brews in the video PLUS honeys and humor.  Dude at the end dancing in his boxers cracks me up.  Devin’s EP, Do Not DistHerb (Suite #420) dropped yesterday so make sure you go pick that up.  In the meantime, enjoy What I Be On.  Happy St. Patty’s day to everyone.  I hope your wearing green.

Doobie Ashtray

devin-the-dude

I was hanging out last night with a couple friends, when one of them played What A Job by Devin The Dude and immediately I downloaded Devin’s album, Just Tryin’ Ta Live which features two of the illest songs ever.  It’s been since like 05 or 06 since I have listened Just Tryin’ Ta Live so it was a perfect album to set the tone for Friday and the whole weekend.  His track, Doobie Ashtray produced by DJ Premier was stuck in my head before I even heard it this morning so I had to share it with the world.  If you are not familiar with Devin and his work, he is one of the most creative, original cats out there period.  I saw him rock in Lawrence back in like 03 or 04 and dude came out with a tub of beer and several blunts and was passing beer and blunts to the crowd during his whole set.  From then on, I was sold.  I haven’t listened to all of his music extensively but I always enjoy when I listen to his music.  I suggest you to start with Doobie Ashtray then continue your journey deeper into his music.  He has some really dope shit.  This is a perfect cut to match the mood of a Friday whether you smoke or not.  He kicks some real shit on this joint.
