Mike Schpitz “Put Em Up” Live on WGCI. Produced by SLOT-A

It was a pretty eventful weekend for me, especially on Saturday.  A couple things came together in the form of radio love.  Saturday Afternoon at 3:15, I was interviewed on Fusion Radio WIIT 88.9FM/CHICAGO with Flying Bee.  We talked about my hometown, Topeka, the hip hop scene in Kansas, my project Stanley Ipkiss, new projects, etc.  I will have the mp3 of the interview this week and will put it up on youtube so everyone can check it out.  Saturday night, I got a call from my guy, Papi Jamon, telling me that I was on WGCI with Timbuck 2.  Sure enough, I started getting texts, tweets and facebook messages about my joint, Put Em Up produced by SLOT-A, was playing on 107.5 WGCI for Go Ill Radio with Timbuck 2.  SLOT-A happened to capture some footage of the song being played and uploaded it to Bang Hot TV.  Check it out.  Happy Monday to everyone and look forward to a lot of big things happening soon.  Sorry for my absence last week.

Chicago Kids

chicago

I got an email this morning from Add-2 that I wanted to share with everyone.  Last Thursday in Chicago, 16 year old Derrion Albert was beaten to death in a huge fight that was captured on video.  I don’t know the exact details, just from what the news has said but he was walking home from school and apparently got caught in a huge fight.  He was an innocent kid caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and lost his life for it.  Everyone knows that I am originally from Kansas, so a lot of the violence and crime in Chicago is new to me.  For the last two and a half years, so many kids and adults have been killed that it is unbelievable to me.  I don’t watch the news at all because it is depressing and just breaks my heart.  I can’t pretend like I know what is going on in Chicago with all of the violence or that I am directly affected by it but I can’t imagine the devastation families, friends and entire communities experience after events like Derrion’s death.  I wanted to share a few of my own thoughts about the horrific situation as well as Add-2′s email and a song he recorded called Chicago Kids.  Here is Add-2′s email

“I wanted to send this song out even though I know some may already have heard it but it seemed appropriate for this time. 16 year old Derrion Albert was beaten to death which was caught on tape in another case of senseless violence. I can’t hide how hurt I am after seeing this video and all the violence that occurs in our city with our youth and when we have kids killing kids we as parents, friends, neighbors and as a community have failed. I hope that we as a community can step up and be better role models, teachers and parents to ALL of these children.”

It is truly unbelievable that another child’s life was cut short at the hands of other children.  I don’t know what is going to happen or what needs to be done for things to change but the world should be aware of Derrion’s death.  I am not going to post the video of the fight because it makes me sick to my stomach.  I hate watching anyone fight but knowing the details surrounding this video, it is so hard to watch.  My thoughts and prayers go out to Derrion Albert’s family, his friends and his community as well as the entire city of Chicago.  Chicago is one of the greatest cities on the planet but situtations like these make it hard to imagine living here.  I can’t imagine how much pain his family and friends are feeling right now.

Red bull Big Tune Beat Battle Chicago

Red Bull Big Tune

Tonight is a very special night for Chicago hip hop as well as for The League’s own Rob Bates.  Tonight is the Chicago leg of the Red Bull Big Tune beat battle.  It features producers from around Chicago and Illinois going head to head showcasing their hottest beats.  Rob Bates made it to the finals last year in New York City.  This year he is back in it again along with my other homie Nascent.  I told you about Nascent and his production work with QB Da Problem and the joints they did for 50 Cent.  Tonight Big Tune is held at The Metro in Chicago and will feature Just Blaze as well as a performance from Little Brother.  Admission is free with an RSVP but this bitch WILL be packed.  I will be in the house and The League of Ordinary Gentlemen will be representing.  My predictions for the battle are Rob Bates vs Nascent in the finals.  We will see who takes home the crown and makes it to the finals.  Make sure you check out Rob Bates and Nascent on myspace, twitter and facebook.  Good luck fellas.

Bloody Weekend

Chicago

Since I have moved to Chicago, I have had to face many disheartening realities.  Bills never stop.  The first comes quicker every month.  Weekends are WAY too short.  Monday’s suck A LOT.  Music industry people are flaky and MOSTLY full of shit.  However, the biggest and most difficult reality I have seen in Chicago is the violence.  Earlier this spring, there were three homocides within two blocks of my house and countless more around the city.  I have heard horror stories about Chicago’s gangs and violence but it doesn’t quite register until u read the papers and watch the news.  I stopped watching the news because of all of the depressing stories.  This weekend, America celebrated the anniversary of our independence with a three day weekend and beautiful weather however, it was perhaps one of the most violent weekends that I have read about in two years.  10 people were killed and DOZENS more were wounded by gunshots or stabbings.  I was forwarded this article and while I was reading it, I had a difficult time making sense of it all because of ALL of the incidents.  It is seriously unbelievable.  I can’t pretend to act like I know what is going on because I am an outsider from Kansas and have only lived here for 2 years but it is EXTREMELY disheartening and scary that people are getting attacked and killed at this rate.  Most residents of Chicago, like myself, just choose to ignore the violence by turning the news off and not reading the newspapers but whether we feel like it affects us personally or not, it affects the entire city.  I can’t even imagine having to deal with this type of violence on a daily basis.  The amount of people that have been victims of violence and the families that are affected is unbelievable.  It’s hard for me to imagine the type of devastation that families experience due to the violence.  I don’t know the root of the problem and I certainly don’t know the solution but it makes me feel helpless.  The worst part is that this type of violence has been going on for YEARS all over the US and of course the whole world.  Every so often, people like myself put up a fuss about the situations but little is ever done to stop the violence and attempt to solve the problem.  It is absolutely heartbreaking.  Here is the article.  Please share your thoughts and comments.  My heart goes out to all of the families and communities that have suffered tragic losses due to the violence.

I know the sound quality isn’t great but here is another gem from the Distant Relatives, Nas and Damian Marley from Rock The Bells 2009 in Chicago.  I’m still salty I missed this shit.  I’m not sure what the song title is but it is incredible that these two cats are on tour together and doing a whole album.  I hope it is as good as it should be.  Everything I have heard/seen has been really dope.

JDP Air Raid Mixtape

JDP Air Raid

I’ve met A LOT of cats in Chicago through this wonderful world of music.  Some dope and some not.  One of the cats that I have witnessed bring heat every time is my guy JDP.  Recently featured as one of URB’s Next 100, he just dropped his mixtape, Air Raid.  I was in the studio while he was recording a few joints for it and dude definitely snapped.  Make sure you check out JDP and download Air Raid.  One of The League’s own, The Gift produced a couple joints on the mixtape as well, Release and Circa 1987.

Club Naked Jumper

340 E Randolph

Yesterday my ace, GC sent an email title OMG!!!  In the email was a Sun Times article about a woman who spent 12 hours threatening to jump from the 25th floor of a Chicago high rise.  To my surprise the building was my guy GC’s old building, 340 E Randolph.  The 25th floor of that building is a common’s area that we called “Club Naked” because of the debauchery that tended to happen on that floor.  I have spent countless hours, drinking, spitting, throwing one dollar bills and partying at Club Naked.  I watched Stevie Wonder perform in Grant Park last year from the 25th.  It blows my mind why anyone would want to leap from such a sacred place.   The view is unreal.  Luckily, firefighters finally talked her down after 12 hours.  Check out the full article and the pictues.  This shit is CRAZY!!!!!!!

Add-2′s “Starter Jacket”

add-2

My man, my mellow and my guy, Add-2, recently just shot a video for his joint “Starter Jacket” produced by Jaguar Skills .  I had the pleasure of stopping through to check out the video shoot and make my litte cameo(shout out to myself….JK).  A lot of people came out to show their support of Add-2 on Friday.  The League of Ordinary Gentlemen were definitely in the house.  Tori Boyd shot the video.  Dakota was taking pictures.  Rob Bates and SLOT-A were also in the house.  Friday was beautiful and the perfect day for the shoot.  In the meantime, listen to Add-2′s joint Starter Jacket which dropped several weeks ago and please believe that as soon as the video drops you will see it here as well.  As promised, Add is doing some incredible things this year.

I’m Good

Kanye West I'm Good

Today is a special day.  Not only is it (Fly) Friday but I revisited one of my favorite mixtapes of all time, Kanye West’s I’m Good.  This was back when people thought Kanye was “making a compilation but he was really making himself they competation(sp).”  I first heard I’m good back in the summer of 03 I think it was, after my freshman year in college and bumped it that whole summer.  I rememeber not only being impressed by the beats(now listening some are pretty wack) but also by Kanye’s abilities on the mic.  He wasn’t the best lyricist but he was funny and said some shit I had never heard before.  One of my favorite lines, “my diamonds yellow like a smoker tooth.”  Not even that hot just funny and stupid.  So this morning when I was listening, I remember falling in love with John Legend’s joint on there, I used to love you, and planned on that being the song of the day until I heard Two Words, Philly N@$#@!, Drop Dead Gorgeous and my personal favorite, Half Price.  So to pay tribute to one of my favorite artists(used to be), Kanye West and this BEAUTIFUL (Fly) Friday in Chicago, today I’m gonna give you the whole mixtape,  Kanye West I’m Good.  Here are a few songs as well as the link for the whole album.  Peep the track list, listen and enjoy.
