Pressure

Fuck it, it’s Black Milk week over this way.  I can’t stop listening to Album of the Year but I figured that I needed a small break so, I’m checking out his mixtape, Pressure that dropped several years ago.  I would be a lot of money that Black Milk becomes one of the industry’s go to producers in the next few years.  Mainstream acts will start fucking with dude for sure.  I’m not sure why they haven’t been for years because he puts out incredible stuff.  Anyway, Pressure is a compilation of tracks that Black produced for himself and other artists.  Tracks like Let’s Go with Pharoahe Monch and Reunion with Slum V are of course stand outs but the whole tape is dope and gives you a taste of what Black Milk has done.  Fast forward to know, Black Milk drops one of the top 10 albums of the year based on production alone.  Oh yea, Canibus is on this shit too going crazy.  Check out Canibus joint, Da Facelift and Keep It Live with Mr. Porter, who is another SICK producer as well.

The Undergods

Undergods

To the surprise of many, two veteran emcees linked up to form a group call The Undergods.  Canibus and Keith Murray, who have been very quiet as of lately, took a page from Slaughterhouse’s book and teamed up to form a super group.  They drop an EP yesterday to give the world a taste of what they are coming with.  This whole project caught me offguard but I was pretty anxious to hear it.  I got a copy last night and listened to it this morning.  I am a fan of both cats especially Canibus but this project feels a little rushed.  The production’s not bad but most of the hooks are just wack.  Having said that, the rhymes are on point and Canibus is a monster.  I don’t really like the dynamic of these two cats together but they don’t sound terrible together.  I just think their styles are way too different to make a solid group.  I think Slaughterhouse as a group is a little tighter but even those cats sounds a little off on a whole album together.  I will definitely be looking forward to the album dropping next year to see if they can actually make it work.  I definitely think people should check out the EP but I wouldn’t expect more than some dope ass rhymes.  The first track and the last track are the highlights for me.  There are a couple surfacing trends in hip hop right now, one being sequels and the other being supergroups and neither seem to work out very well.  Check out The Undergods joint featuring Crooked I, Die Big Time and 129.

It’s dope to hear Erick Sermon doing his thing on the production tip.  His joint on Raekwon’s album is ill too.

I’m Your Worst Nightmare Squared

Common

When I hear joints like Making A Name For Ourselves from Common’s One Day It Will All Make Sense featuring Canibus, it makes me realize how incredible hip hop can be.  The beat, which was produced by NO I.D. is just a grimey, simple head nodder and the both MCs just spit flames the whole way through.  Canibus absolutely MURDERS the track.  This has got to be one of my favorite Canibus verses of all time.  If anyone is NOT familiar with how Canibus gets down, do some research and download all his projects simply for his lyrics. Canibus is one of those MCs you could listen to a cappella and still be in awe.  This was also back in Common’s hay day where anything he touched was gold.  For all those who just hopped on the Common bandwagon, dude USED to go hard(see Common’s The Bitch in Yoo).  Nowadays, you rarely hear “MCs” going this hard.  If you are an aspiring MC or just a fan of dope beats and dope lyrics, check this joint out.  Listen to Canibus’ last verse.  Dude blacks out.

Yo the Canibus is an animal with a mechanical mandible/ coming to damage you, spittin understandable slang at you”

And those are just the first two bars.  JESUS!!!!!  Enjoy some real hip hop shit from two dope MCs.
