And some classic Blu!

It’s a good night when Slick Rick and Premo drop a record and Blu and Pete Rock drop one too. Hopefully the Jayhawks don’t blow it.
One of my favorite emcees of all time and one of the most underrated and underappreciated cats, Blu just dropped a music video for his joint, MyBoyBlu. This joint is pretty old but very dope nonetheless. Check it out and let’s all pray from new music from Blu.
“And don’t nobody wanna liberate the weight of the pain”
Man, it feels like a new world now that I am free to explore some new and old music. I am telling you guys, the Gorilla Zoe Challenge REALLY took it out of me. It’s gonna take months to get back right. This weekend helped immensely though. I bumped The Fugees, Lauryn Hill and went to see Blu in concert on Saturday. This was my first time seeing Blu live after being a huge fan for the last few years. The show as a whole was pretty dope too. Chicago emcee, ADad had a really nice set and Tanya Morgan did their thing as well. The venue was packed by the time Blu came on and he was really dope live. Despite forgetting some of his words, Blu raps just as well in person as he does in the studio. He performed with Exile as his deejay, who did some live MPC worked and even performed a couple songs. I can’t say enough about how good the show was. If you are not familiar with Blu, liste to his album with Exile, Below The Heavens right now and when he comes to your city, go see him live. He is one of the most underrated emcees out and one of the nicest dudes period. After the show, I have been listening too Below The Heavens and Dancing In The Rain really struck a cord with me. Blu performed this joint live and had everyone in the crowd singing the words. Dancing In The Rain will fit the Monday vibe very well. And in case you haven’t seen my video, The Rain, here is a Monday bonus. Enjoy,
Happy Friday again and again and again. I wonder how come every Friday feels better than the last one? Last night I stumbled across a Blu mixtape by DJ Heat called Soul Amazing Part 2. I can’t imagine a better soundtrack to a shitty Friday in Chicago than some Blu. If anybody is still unfamiliar with Blu, PLEASE go buy Below The Heavens. It is a hip hop classic and put Blu among hip hop’s dopest emcees and Exile as an underground king on the beats. It is one of those albums that came out of left field and “Blu” everyone away. I haven’t listened to Blu for a while but when I saw this mixtape, I knew there was nothing better to listen to today. I’m not sure what projects all of these joints are from but there are a lot of Blu’s joints/features with other people which is always dope. Phonte, Kweli, Evidence and even Kid Cudi are on there. I don’t even know when this mixtape dropped but you should download it ASAP. Here is the download link that I stole from 2dopeboyz and a few cuts to get you warmed up.
DJ Heat and Blu Soul Amazing Part 2
I didn’t know there was a video for For Whom The Bells Tolls. BONUS!!!!!!!!
Call me a hater or just schlow to hop on bandwagons(I call myself a trendsetter…smh) but I rarely rush out to listen to the newest internet rapper with a song/mixtape that everyone pegs as “dope, refreshing, a beast.” I tend to stick to my guns and welcome referrals from friend’s whose musical taste I trust. Today I went WAY out on a limb and put in “Roc Nation’s” first artist, J. Cole. Hailing from Fayetteville, NC, I figured dude would have a Little Brother or Petey Pablo feel. Ignorant I know. I got a couple of his mixtapes on Sunday night and put in The Warm Up this morning. Keep in mind I’m only 9 tracks deep so I haven’t given dude a fair shot but the music is cool. Dude definitely has some talent. None of the songs I have heard are bad. None have blown me away though. As an MC, I hate comparisons but if someone sounds like someone else, that’s what it is. Dude sounds like like Drake and Blu put together. Not a bad combination though. As a true fan of hip hop and the way that it CAN make people feel, I don’t feel right saying J. Cole is that dude because so far I haven’t gotten that feeling. Everyone knows what feeling I’m talking about. Regardless though, J. Cole is definitely a step in the right direction. It’s weird though because it seems like the newest trend in hip hop are the decent MCs with decent songs. Guys that show a personal, conscious side, love hoes, want to be fly and all kind of have the same style. Drake, Wale, J. Cole, Mickey Factz, (enter any other internet rapper), etc…………Like I said though, it’s definitely a step in the right direction. I suggest you guys listen to dude and decide for yourself. I hope he really is signed to Roc Nation and I hope he does well though. Like Wale and Drake, I like what he “stands” for. I guess we will really see when those singles and that album drops with exec’s in his ear. Oh yea, and my theme song for the day is from Chicago’s illest, Lupe Fiasco, Hurt Me Soul. For some reason, I woke up this morning singing this song nonstop. I been making up my own lyrics all morning. “My job is bogus, I swallowed a locust, I want my Jordans, my girlfriend’s snoring and I got no place to goooooooo.”
Enjoy
Shout out to Nia Long for clarifying what song I was singing.
A few of hip hop’s finest!!!!!!
Much like record industry, the magazine and print industry has suffered a major blow because of the internet and its accessiblity to information. As soon as news happens, its on the internet. Two of hip hop’s most “respected” magazines also seem to have lost their place in the hip hop world. The most recent covers of XXL magazine have featured Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo and OJ Da Juice and the following issue featured Fabolous and The Dream. Now I don’t want to take a shot at any particular artist but if these are the people chosen to represent our culture for two months in a row, hip hop has definitely lost its way. I can’t say that I am a fan of any of the artists featured, although I have listened to enough music from each one to be able to comment. The fact that one of the only hip hop magazine’s continues to flood the public eye with artists who provide relatively no creativity, vision or passion for the culture is a shame. I know it’s not fair to make the assumptions but let’s be real. Fabolous is a label puppet. He manages to stay relevant not do to his own talents but because he caters to the current state of hip hop. When Nate Dogg was hot, Fabolous was on a track with Nate. When The Neptunes were hot, Fabolous got tracks from them and now that The Dream is hot, Fabolous is using The Dream’s limelight to stay relevant. It is a shame because Fab is no slouch on the mic. He just really has no voice. He says the same thing, the same way on every song. He does whatever the label tells him to do. These other artist don’t need to be addressed. Their music is what it is. XXL should be ashamed of themselves for continuously perpetuating how the rest of the world views hip hop. If cats like The Roots, Blu, Wale, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco and Pharoahe Monch were consistently on the covers of magazines, MAYBE hip hop would not be viewed in such a negative light. I mean Gucci Mane makes some of the most ridiculous(I mean ridiculously bad) music I have heard in recent years. Is this how we want people to view the music and the culture? This if my official challenge to XXL and The Source to grow some balls and help change how hip hop is portrayed in the mainstream. You have the platform so now it is time to use it because if Fabolous, The Dream, Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane are hip hop on a higher level, I must be confused.
