Sorry for my absence on Friday but please know that I was bumping a certified classic all day and all weekend. Where to begin? Outkast is undoubtably the greatest hip hop entity of all time so, it was only right after seeing Big Boi live that I revisited their second album, ATLiens. If the artwork alone doesn’t make this shit great, well then every single song on the album does. While many people still might not have been giving Outkast their due after Southernplayalistic, ATLiens solidified their path into hip hop’s greatest. Aquemini was the homerun and everything after is just shit talking. Anyway, I’m not even sure where to begin with this album and what cut to show so, I’ll drop one of my favorite hooks ever, Millenium. Try to hum the hook all the way through. Once again, I’m sorry that it’s not Friday but ATLiens might make you feel like it is.

Big Boi Live
I know I have been going pretty hard for Big Boi in the last couple weeks but yesterday evening just reaffirmed the fact that, Big Boi is AMAZING. I sound like I have a middle school crush. I got the opportunity to go to the Pitchfork Music Festival yesterday in Chicago and see Big Boi rock live with a band. We were pretty damn close to the stage so we could feel the energy and hear every word Big Boi was saying. He played old tracks, new tracks and even rocked Kryptonite with his artist/hype man, C Bone. I’ve seen a lot of shows and a lot of people who can’t rock live. Big Boi sounds just as good live as he does in the studio. I definitely urge anyone who has the chance to see Big Boi live, buy tickets. You will not be disappointed. In spirit of Big Boi’s shows last night, I wanted to share a couple videos of him performing live on Jimmy Fallon with The Roots and on Lopez Tonight. Happy Monday and go buy Sir Luscious Left Foot right now.
Man I can’t wait until The Roots drop that OFFICIAL, Live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon project. They artists that they have been backing have just been incredible collaborations.
Weekly Sales 7/14/2010
This has been a pretty exciting week for me especially because I have purchased three albums in the last week, probably the most music I have bought since like 2001. Three incredible albums that needed to be supported though. I was anxious to see how many units Big Boi could move especially after dropping such a SICK album. My predictions were pretty solid but they are a little disappointing. Big Boi debuted at number three behind Eminem and Drake, moving 63K. One of those being mine of course. Eminem moved another 229 THOUSAND this week and Drake did another 74 K. Check the top.

Janelle Monae featuring B.o.B. and Lupe Fiasco “Tightrope Wondamix” Video
One of music’s more interesting artists, Janelle Monae is making a lot of noise this year with the release of her album, The ArchAndroid and her lead single, Tightrope featuring Big Boi. I got the chance to see her open for Erykah Badu and she was very dope. Recently she put out a remix and a video for her single, Tightrope featuring two of hip hop’s most interesting cats, B.o.B. and Lupe Fiasco. I can’t lie, B.o.B. kind of kills this record. I look forward to seeing what Janelle Monae does in the future because she can sing her ass off and I think she is originally from Kansas City. Check out the video
The Making of Outkast’s Aquemini
I came across a cool article on HipHopDx via Creative Loafing ATL about The Making of Outkast’s album, Aquemini. The article gives some interviews with different people involved in the creative process of each song. Many of the tracks producers, musicians and of course Big Boi and Dre, provide some incredible insight about the album. I don’t like to hearing or seeing too much about the making of tracks and albums only because it takes away the “magical mystery” of the song but this article is really cool. Here are a few exerpts about my favorite tracks. I forgot about the drama surrounding the title of their single, Rosa Parks.
The Making of Outkast’s Aquemini
“Aquemini”
Produced by OutKast for Earthtone
A three-dimensional aural massage with a mystical hook that gave cause to question everything you ever thought you believed and to believe nothing you never thought to question
Mr. DJ: On the album before Aquemini, me and Dre grew dreads. We went to Jamaica one time and took our cornrows out and we swam in the ocean, and we decided we were never going to comb our hair again.
After having dreads you realize how people discriminate against you just because of the way you look. Towards the end, around the time we got ready to do this album, we just cut our dreads off. So that’s what Dre was referring to when he says: ‘Is every nigga with dreads for the cause?/Is every nigga with golds for the fall?” He’s just explaining that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Andre 3000: I was a young man searching, a young black man, so I was looking into Rastafarianism, Islam, whatever. I started to notice that all the stories were similar, it was more about a mutual respect and exchange of energy. When you rap and say anything kinda conscious, all the conscious people approach you. So after ATLiens I got it all – from books on sex to [metaphysics] and religion. But you also get introduced to a lot of fake phony ass people, and I addressed it in the song. You find some of the fakest people with dreads pouring oils on you. And it’s really kind of mind-blowing when you’re a young person and you start to find out some of this is bullshit, so then you’re just out there searching.
Big Boi: ‘Aquemini’ was just the meshing of both worlds, with me being an Aquarius and him being a Gemini. It was subtle on ATLiens, but by the time we got to Aquemini it was like we had two different visions that were [parallel]. So the thing with us was to always show the team.
“West Savannah” feat. Sleepy Brown
Produced by Organized Noize
Originally recorded for OutKast debut, “West Savannah” drips with Organized Noize’s snappy-nappy funk and a youthful-sounding Big Boi giving listeners a too-grown-for-his-own-good guided tour through his native Savannah stomping grounds.
Big Boi: A lot of times when we record, we over record. Dre also had a song called “Bow Your Head.” It was the counterpart to “West Savannah,” so with different albums we might throw like a bonus in there for the listeners, to give them something that’s nostalgic of the times and Dre said, “We need to throw that ‘West Savannah’ on the record.” So I was like, “Shit, let’s do it.” And you know that’s my hometown. I’m from Savannah, Ga. and there’s a lot of people there that I love and my family is there, so I’m all about it.
Andre 3000: Sometimes songs are done ahead of their time. It was done during Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. Some songs sit, like “Hey Ya” was done three years before it came out.

Got Purp? Vol. 2
As promised, it’s Big Boi week around these parts. It’s been several years since I listened to Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon All Stars, Got Purp? Volume 2. I remember only liking a few songs back when it dropped but Kryptonite made the whole project worthwhile. Since Got Purp Volume 2, Killer Mike has left Purple Ribbon and changed his name to Mike Bigga, Bubba Sparxxx has disappeared and Janelle Monae also linked with Diddy and dropped her album this year. Not to mention, Big Boi’s first solo album is the best album to come out in a few years. I’m not sure what Konkrete has been up too though. Anyway, just as a refresher, here is the video for Kryptonite. Goodie Mob also has a joint on this project called Hold On that is pretty dope.
Weekly Numbers 7/7/2010
Eminem is still sitting on top of the charts this week and reached platinum in just two weeks of sales. Congrats to Em, that’s pretty incredible considering the state of things. Drake is sitting at number two and sold another 100K this week. Love King, The Dream moved 58K in his first week. That is kind of surprising considering that R&B seems to be the way to sell records nowadays. Here is the top

It’s kind of amazing that you can be on the charts by only selling 2500 copies in a week. I feel like I could do that out of my bookbag. Dwele sold 14K in his first week. The Roots moved 21,000 in their second week. One of those copies will be mine next week. Whoever Blaze Ya Dead Homie is moved a few more units this week. Big Boi is on the chopping block next week. Hopefully he can do at least 100K but I’m predicting 60-75K. Regardless, go buy his album.
Big Boi Mixtape for Dummies: Guide to Global Greatness
Since it’s a short week and because Big Boi’s album dropped yesterday, I decided this whole week is a tribute to Big Boi and his musical accomplishments. Prior to the album, a couple mixtapes dropped. I posted Daddy Fat Sacks last week and today, I’m listening to Big Boi Mixtape for Dummies, which was put together by DJ X-Rated and DJ Esco. This mixtape is a compilation of some older Outkast stuff and some features that Big Boi has been on through the years. I guess they dropped this mixtape for people who are not up on Big Boi and need a quick history lesson. My advice would be to listen to every Outkast, Goodie Mob and Dungeon Family album in succession and find every other track, feature, verse that these guys have dropped. I was happy to see one of my favorite Outkast joints, Benz or Beamer featured on this mixtape. You can definitely let the whole tape ride, even the Chris Brown song. Love In Your Mouth also make an awesome feature on the tape. Below I have included the video for Benz or Breamer and a download link to the mixtape straight from Big Boi’s website. Now go out and purchase Sir Lucious Left Foot NOW!!!!!!!

Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
Happy “Monday” to everyone. I am sure most people are dragging ass today from the extended holiday weekend. I know today was harder than most days to get up and get to work. Hopefully noboby blew their hand off this weekend trying to throw bottlerockets or M-80′s. Today is one of the biggest days in hip hop in YEARS. As you might have seen, I have been hyping up Big Boi’s first solo album, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty for a while now. This album was supposed to drop several times but the wait was definitely worth it. I purchased my copy from Target this morning for $9.99. It was going for $13.99 at Best Buy. The Deluxe version is also available, which includes a DVD with the 5 videos Big Boi has released and two bonus tracks. I recommend buying the deluxe version if your not on a budget like me. However, count my unit towards the 60K he will see in the first week. Only if Big Boi could do Eminem numbers, there might be hope for quality hip hop regaining its stronghold. Props to Eminem though. Anyway, like I have been saying all along, Big Boi’s album is CRAZY and will definitely be album of the year. I know Kanye is supposed to drop in September and Detox MIGHT come up but they won’t be fucking with SLLF. I think a lot of people were doubting Big Boi’s ability to drop a classic without Andre in the mix but Big Boi does just that. I think most people will stray away from calling it a classic but I guarantee everyone will STILL be bumping this shit ten years from now. There isn’t one song that I skip. Even the Jamie Foxx song, produced by Lil Jon is sick. Big Boi just furthers Outkast’s legacy in hip hop and does so by doing what they always do, reinvent themselves. For those who think Andre is the key to their success, listen to this album and to Speakerboxxx. Big Boi not only holds his own but provides exactly the same amount of innovateness and skills that Andre does. I doubt anyone will rate this album perfect but I’m not sure what else Big Boi could have done to make the album better. Maybe add Cee Lo and Andre to the mix but label politics seem to forbid Andre’s guest verses. Sir Lucious Left Foot just cements my point that Outkast is the greatest hip hop entity of all time. Go out and copy Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty today. Here are the videos that have dropped so far. Enjoy and Happy Tuesday.
Speakerboxxx
BOI STOOOOOOOPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!! As if I need to say a word about today’s classic but in honor of Big Boi’s first solo album, Sir Lucious Left Foot dropping on Tuesday and it being amazing, I HAD to listen to Speakerboxxx. I was jamming it EXTRA hard this morning(no homo). I’ll save the chit chatter and just reinforce the fact that Outkast is and will forever be the greatest hip hop entity of all time. NO ONE is touching Kast. With that said, Boom Boom after Boom.
Happy Friday and enjoy the EXTENDED weekend.
