For my last post of 2009, I wanted to share the weekly numbers with everyone. Christmas seemed to be very helpful to a lot of artist’s sales including Eminem, Alicia Keys and Black Eyed Peas. New releases like Mary J Blige and Young Money’s We Are Young Money made strong debuts as well. Here is the top.

Despite dropping one of the best albums of the year, the Clipse are still not moving units like they should. Gucci Mane’s sales are a little disappointing,” if you look at how many times his shit is played on the radio. 50 Cent looks like he probably won’t break gold either. I wonder how people are feeling about 2009 and what the future will hold???? Stayed tuned for next weeks sales. Happy Holidays to all. See you next year.
It’s Flannel Friday here at work and what better way to match that warm, fuzzy, comfortable vibe than with a classic album. I had to make a very important decision today and choose if I was going to listen to one of the two new Young Money/Cash Money releases or some classic shit. I decided to put off Lil Wayne’s Rebirt and Young Money’s We Are Young Money until next week. Surprisingly, I never listened to Illmatic religiously like I should have but every time I do get a chance to listen, I’m blown away. Nas is definitely one of the illest of all time. Every track on Illmatic is classic in my opinion, from the beats to the rhymes. I wish I would have been listening to that shit back when it dropped, although I probably wouldn’t have understood any of it. If you are a sleeper like me or a big Nas fan, take this Friday to listen back to Illmatic. It’s the perfect way to start the weekend. Here is my shit, New York State of Mind.
Here is Alica Keys remix with Nas and Rakim. Also very dope.
“And the day came when the risk it took to remain tightly closed in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to bloom. This is the element of freedom.”
I wanted to start the day off, the same way Alicia Keys new album begins with some inspirational words for everyone. I like that quote a lot. I wonder if she wrote it. So I have had two full days to listen to Miss Keys new album, The Element of Freedom and let it sink in and marinate a little bit. Typically by this time in her album release, she has already released two singles that I absolutely love. This time, I’m not a huge fan of either of her singles, Doesn’t Mean Anything and Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart. I think more so than her, it is the production. After listening to the album, I find myself feeling the same way. I love the sound of her voice, her lyrics are always on point but this time, I do not enjoy the production with a couple exceptions. My favorite song actually features MikeSchpitz.com’s most frequently hated upon artists, Drizzy Drake. Now Drake only sings like 2 lines in the whole song but I am wondering if he might have written it. Even this song, I’m not a huge fan of the production. I can put my finger on it but the album just sounds light like it has no edge which for me, that is one of the parts I loved about Alicia Keys so much. She always incorporated hip hop elements in her music. This album has almost none of that. That being said, it’s a very solid album but just not my cup of tea. DAMN it pains me to say that. I will be interested in reading reviews and seeing her album sales though. To top it off, her video for Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart is WACK. Her lover Swizz Beats does contribute a joint that features Beyonce that is pretty cool. Sounds like a Beyonce song though. Check out Unthinkable(I’m Ready) featuring Drake.
Man even her cover art is disappointing. I still love you though baby.
Back in 2000, the world was introduced to one of the most beautiful and talented young women in music. Alicia Keys took the world by storm when she released her first single, Fallin’. Since then, Mrs. Jones, I mean Keys, has released 2 studio albums, an MTV Unplugged album and continued to develop into one of music’s leading ladies. She is preparing to drop her fourth studio album, The Element of Freedom in December. This morning I decided to listen to her debut album, Songs in A Minor for the first time in years. I got to say, Alicia Keys always hits me in the same place. Her voice is incredible and her music is just the shit. My favorite joint this morning was Rock wit U. The intro is my shit. I am looking forward to hearing her new album in December. She even has a remix to Empire State of Mind with Jay-Z that should be ill. I’ll keep everyone posted about all that as well. Shout out to Jay-Z and the Yankees A-Rod, CC Sabathia and Jay for sitting courtside for Lebron’s game versus the Knicks on Friday. Those guys have entirely too much fun with their money.
Those are the infamous words that made me realize Alicia Keys felt the same way about me that I felt about her. Since then, she has written and sang countless songs about how good my love is and how it all means nothing “if she doesn’t have me.” Let me tell you, it’s an incredible feeling to find true love. I encourage you all to try it sometime. Mrs. Jones, I mean Keys just released the video for her single, Doesn’t Mean Anything and of course it is beautiful and perfect. Thank you baby. I can’t wait until she hears my joint, Shake Em Off that I wrote for her. I invite everyone to enjoy Miss Keys new video, Doesn’t Mean Anything. She looks absolutely beautiful. Stay tuned and glued to MikeSchpitz.com for FlawlessHustle.com’s mixtape, Money Isn’t Real which drops today. Yours truly had 3 new, exclusive joints on Money Isn’t Real. Shout out to Hav and the whole Flawless Hustle family.
I’m not going to make a habit of reviewing albums because I do not consider myself a journalist or an authority on hip hop. I’m just a cat who knows a little bit about hip hop with some opinions about music and how people do it. However, because I have showed so much attention and energy to Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3, I wanted to share my thoughts on the album as a whole. First off, let me go on record as saying that Jay-Z is in a league of his own as far as a rapper/emcee/business man. Nobody in rap has accomplished the things that Jay-Z has and for that I tip my hat. He has 3 albums, that many consider classic material. He has sold an incredible amount of albums and apparently has 10 number ones album, “maybe 11 now.” I would never try to take anything away from Jay-Z as a business or as an influential person not only in hip hop but in entertainment. Now, having said all that, I am listening to Blueprint 3 with a very critical ear. Especially considering that it came from the same guy who calls himself ”the best rapper alive” and “if I ain’t better than BIG then I’m the closest one.” This guy has 3 albums that are classics, a slew of hits and has been the biggest name in hip hop from 98 til 2006(sorry but Kanye and Wayne run shit now), so I expect very dope music from Jay. Maybe I’m the only one. Blueprint 3 has had a lot of buzz and hype surrounding it ever since Jay released Jockin’ Jay-Z and Swagger Like Us. He has released several other songs that haven’t quite caught on like History and Brooklyn(We Go Hard). His first official single from BP3 was DOA aka Death of Autotune. It caught a lot of buzz because of the overusage of autotune by EVERYONE in hip hop. His second single is Run This City features Rihanna on the Hook and Kanye over a Kanye beat. Both songs in my opinion, fall short of the quality of single that Jay-Z is capable of but some people seem to like them. The rest of the album, although not as bad as it could be, is disappointing, especially coming for “the God MC, me J Hova.” BP3 has several of hip hop’s most higly regarded producers contributing but failing to provide more than a couple songs that will stand the tests of time. The highlights of the album are Thank You, Reminder, Empire State of Mind(thank you Alicia Keys) and As Real As It Gets(thank you Young Jeezy). The most disappointing aspect of the album for me, and I have been saying this for a while, is Jay-Z lyrics and flow. As a fellow emcee, I listen to words heavy. One of the main reasons I began listening to Jay-Z was because of his lyrics and his flow. He used to be impeccable, rarely missing a beat. On every song on BP3, Jay sounds lazy, bored and old. He tries to “swag” out his voice and lyrics rather than just rap well. There is honestly not one quotable that sticks out in my mind. I never ran a song back and I never had to put on one of those scrunch faces for a Jay quotable. In fact, Jay is overshadowed by MUCH less capable rappers like Kanye West, Young Jeezy and newcomer, J. Cole. I want everyone to take that in real quick. Compare those names. That is an absolute tragedy in my opinion, ESPECIALLY on his OWN DAMN ALBUM. This is like being murdered by Eminem in his prime on Renegade. Young Jeezy, Kanye West and J. Cole. That is a fucking shame. BP3 is clearly an attempt to stay relevant in a time where hip hop has no face, no direction, no leaders and no soul. Jay-Z tries to continue his leadership by putting together a clusterfuck of beats from producers that are clearly on different pages. There are definitely some dope beats on the album but are overshadowed by lazy raps and weird adlibs from Jay. Having said all that and “hating” for several months leading up to BP3, I encourage everyone to listen for themselves and form their own opinions about the album. Who knows, you might hear some shit I didn’t hear. Maybe I’m just one of those “fools who don’t listen to music I just skim through it” or maybe I am just holding Jay-Z to a standard that he is not capable of attaining again. I do have some praise for Jay-Z though and his recent work, his new rhapsody commerical is amazing. PEEP!!!!
And if you think I am just hating or being to hard on Jay, peep this LA Times review.
Although it is a day later than I expected, Jay-Z’s new album Blueprint 3 has sprung a leak. I have not heard the whole album but I definitely will this evening. Hip Hop Dx has two new joints, Empire State of Mind featuring Alicia Keys and Hate featuring Kanye West. I will have a full synopsis on the album later this week but in the mean time, enjoy(or don’t) Hate and Empire State of Mind. How the stans feeling??????
