Last week, I gave a glimpse into my new project, The Prize Package Volume 1 detail a little bit of the backstory and inspiration.  This week I spoke with my people at RefinedHype.com and gave some more details about the project titled “5 Things You Need To Know About Mike Schpitz’ “Prize Package.”  Sounds dirty huh?  Check out a snippet of the feature and the full article over at RefinedHype.com.  The Prize Package Volume 1 drops on March 31st via DJBooth.net, RefinedHype.com and YNotMyDream.net.

Harold’s Prize Package: The Inspiration

“The Prize Package Volume 1″ is inspired by the legendary burger dive, Harold’s Prize Package in Topeka, KS. Not only can you get a tasty double cheeseburger, onion rings, fried okra and a Welches Strawberry, you can get Swisher Sweets, Lottery Tickets, bootleg movies and perhaps some oil for your car. Although it’s only open on weekdays, that greasy brown paper bag is one of the best lunch time meals you can find in Topeka. It’s unassuming white building only adds to its legend causing many passers by to not even notice it at all. Lunchtime is absolutely insane so, it is highly recommended that people call ahead unless the phones are too busy. Then, you just have to wait a while.

6th and Locust: On Location

The artwork for the project was an obvious choice after I came up with the title. I brainstormed with my “art guy,” Heath O’Campo(who also grew up eating Prize Package) and we came up with some ideas about how we wanted the artwork to look. We got together over Thanksgiving break, the day of my Annual Homecoming Reunion show, and took some cool pictures. We went back a few days later to take some more pictures on the weekend so, there weren’t a ton of people and cars crowding the pictures. Lunchtime at Prize Package is pretty insane especially if you don’t call ahead. We made a bad decision that day to not call ahead. We got some great pictures though and of course some great food.

The Prize Package Volume 1: The Back Story and Inspiration

On March 30th, 2011, my new project, The Prize Package Volume 1 will be released via DJBooth.net, RefinedHype.com and YNotMyDream.net. To raise awareness and get everyone up to speed, I wanted to share the inspiration and back story about the project. Below is a detailed description of the project, it’s inspiration and the release schedule. I also included the cover art and track list, which of course, were done by Heath O’Campo. I hope you enjoy.

In the cluttered and ever-changing food industry in Topeka, Kansas, one place has managed to set itself apart from the rest for years with tasty, cheap, greasy food. Located at 6th Ave and Locust St on Topeka’s East Side, Harold’s Prize Package has become a Topeka staple for locals in search of great food. With lunchtime patrons ranging from businessmen and women from Topeka’s bustling downtown to high school students from all over USD 501, Harold’s serves up some of the best burgers and fried foods that can be found anywhere in Northeast Kansas. A typical lunch might include a greasy double cheeseburger, an order of fried okra and a Welch’s Strawberry soda. In addition to one of the best meals in the city, one might also be able to grab some batteries, a package of Swisher Sweets, jumper cables and an advanced copy of Transformers 3. They have a little something for everyone. To pay homage to this legendary burger spot, Mike Schpitz has teamed up with a few of the most important online voices for underground and unsigned artists, DJBooth.net, RefinedHype.com and YNotMyDream.net, to release his compilation mixtape, The Prize Package Volume 1. Volume 1 features 21 tracks of material compiled since 2008. The Prize Package Volume 1 features appearances and production from Adullessence, Dre Dai, Pete Sayke, Papi Jamon, SLOT-A, Ill Brown, Maja 7th, Ta-Ku, THX, LONEgevity and more. Leading up to its release on March 30th 2011, Mike Schpitz will be releasing a song a week for four weeks beginning on March 2nd. Attached are the cover and track list which features Mike Schpitz on location at Harold’s Prize Package. The photos and artwork were all done by Topeka native, Heath O’Campo, who has been responsible for Schpitz’s Sunday Drive, Love Potion Number 9th: The Hangover and Mike Murder. So in spirit of Harold’s, its food and its importance to the Topeka community, please enjoy this dynamic collection of hip hop music compiled by Topeka’s own, Mike Schpitz.

Travis Barker feat. Clipse “Come N Get It” Music Video

A little visual love for Travis Barker’s joint, Come N Get It featuring one of my favorite groups, Clipse. Pusha sounds tired as hell on this song but it’s fresh. Check out Come N Get It below. Travis Barker’s mixtape with DJ Whoo Kid, Let The Drummer Get Wicked is out now and you can download it below too.

West Coastin’

In honor of the NBA All Star festivities this weekend in LA, me and my buddy, Todd, held our second Beards, Beats and Brews Battle at the house on Saturday.  To serve as a backdrop for the Three Point Contest, Skills Challenge and Dunk Contest, we both compiled playlist consisting of nothing but West Coast music.  It was pretty awesome listening to nothing but West Coast bangers all night.  I had a great time compiling a playlist of some of my favorites and hearing them on the loudspeakers.  I decided to keep the party going into Sunday and today and trimmed my 130 song playlist to around 30 songs so I could listen in the car.  Needless to say, I’m still West Coastin’ all day despite the snow falling in Chicago.  I figured I would share a few of my favorite joints from my playlist/CD.  Check out some of my favorite West Coast songs of all time.  The playlist is still a work in progress but it has some unbelievable songs on it right now.  Happy Monday.

OFWGKTA

OFWGKTA is a crew of cats ages 16-20 and apparently they are blowing up right now.  Tyler The Creator and Hodgy Beats just rocked live on Jimmy Fallon with The Roots.  Tyler’s new video, Yonkers is causing a stir online and they are performing at Coachella Music Festival as well.  My guy Trumaine, who put me on to Kendrick Lamar, told me about these cats a few months back but I slept a little hard but lately I’ve been seeing a lot about them so decided to give some of their material a listen.  I got Tyler’s album, Bastard and Earl Sweatshirt’s album, Earl in the car as we speak.  I have been very impressed with these dudes.  Despite what some might call, disturbing and shocking subject matter, these cats are talented and are making some good music.  It seems that they are developing a crazy following and 2011 might be the breakout year for these cats.  Check out two dope videos for Tyler’s joint, Yonkers and Earl’s joint Earl.  It’s great to see young cats doing their own thing and who can actually rhyme and make good music.  Shout out to OFWGTA, if you haven’t heard them yet, you will soon.  It looks like we might have another HUGE movement in hip hop.

And check out the footage from Tyler and Hodgy tearing down Jimmy Fallon.  Shout out to Mos Def!!!

Yelawolf featuring Bun B “Good To Go” Music Video

2011 is starting off well for Yelawolf, who is the latest addition to Eminem’s Shady Records along with Slaughterhouse.  Yelawolf drops his new video for Good To Go featuring Bun B.  The video is pretty sick.  Definitely a great way to kick off his new Shady deal.  I can’t wait to hear what Yelawolf will drop now.  He is definitely one of my favorite cats to come out in the last few years.  If you don’t already have Trunk Muzik, you need to get that now.
