Weekly Numbers 1/20/2010

January is half over and the numbers keep “rolling” in.  Only one, “noteworthy” album dropped last week.  Omarion’s Ollusion came out and it was clear that NOBODY cared.  Well, 19,000 people cared.  I have been having an internal struggle because a part of me really wants to hear the album but I feel like I already know it’s gonna be horrible.  Ack Right or whatever his single is, is kind of dope I guess.  Anyway, it’s amazing that Black Eyed Peas are STILL moving more units that most people.  Alicia Keys is still creeping towards platinum status, Mary J. Blige is still doing pretty well and Young Money is sticking around.  Here is the top.

Rank Artist Album This Week Est. Total
5 Alicia Keys Element of Freedom

13 Rihanna Rated R
24,000 550,000

And for the bottom.

Rank Artist Album This Week Est. Total

163 Clipse Til The Casket Drops
2,900 62,000

I’m not sure why people aren’t rushing out to by Clipse album but are STILL supporting Blueprint 3. Wait, dumb statement. Teenage girls aren’t bumping the Clipse like that. Oh well. Stay tuned until next week.  Hopefully Omarion can move a few more units before he gets dropped again.

Fit Right and The Bump LONEgevity Remixes

Today is my first planned release of 2010.  Last week was a surprise to me included to find some footage of my live performance at Mc B’s in Topeka.  Today I am releasing two remixes of my joints, Fit Right and The Bump.  Both songs were featured on my EP/Demo, 100K Takeover.  The Bump was also featured on my mixtape, Love Potion Number 9th: The Hangover.  Fit Right was originally produced by THX and recorded as a submission for Ursession.com and The Wake Up Show’s contest, The 100K Battle.  The Bump was also part of that contest.  Even though I didn’t win, both songs turned out really ill.  My guy LONEgevity hit me up about doing some remixes so I sent him a few acapellas and voila.  Shout out to LONEgevity for bring a fresh sound to both of these tracks and making them my own now.  Download, listen and share both remixes, Fit Right and The Bump produced by LONEgevity.

Make sure you holler at LONEgevity too and check out some more of his work.  He is an emcee/producer and half of the group HINX JONES from Indianapolis.

True Magic

After listening to Mos Def’s The Ecstatic a whole bunch last year, I started thinking about his previous albums, The New Danger and True Magic.  I remember not really feeling either of them when they dropped but I couldn’t help but think that maybe they took more than a few listens.  So, for the last few days, I have been listening to True Magic and I must say that I enjoy it more than I remember.  It is still not as ill as Black On Both Sides or The Ecstatic but it has some nice cuts on there.  Mos doesn’t quite display his full force, lyrical capabilities but I like the album more than I thought I would.  Tracks like Undeniable, U R The One and Murder of a Teenage Life are very dope.  Murder of a Teenage Life is apparently produced by The Neptunes(according to Wikipedia).  It is a very powerful song and much darker that a lot of Mos’ other work.  If you don’t remember liking True Magic back in 06 when it dropped, I suggest checking it out again.  I think it might grow on you.  In the meantime, check out Murder of a Teenage Life.  Stay tuned until tomorrow because I am dropping two new remixes.

Add-2 I Came Up and Adult Swim

The homie Add-2 sent me an email on Friday with two new songs/unreleased songs to help celebrate his video, Luxury being accepted on MTV.  This is a HUGE look for Add-2 as well as all of the artists that he works with.  Please hit up Add-2 to show him some love and stay tuned to MTVU, MTV2 and MTV Jams to see the video for Luxury.  Yours truly has a nice little cameo as well as SLOT-A getting his grown and sexy on with the gold turtle neck.  Here are the two new tracks, I Came Up and Adult Swim both produced by Antman Wonder.  Check them out

Look What I Got

Classic Shit Fridays is moving right along, this time with one of the illest dudes from Atlanta, T.I.  I took a back to his 2nd album, Trap Muzik, which most people probably consider a certified classic.  T.I. really gets doper every time I hear him.  Dude is SUPER underrated in terms of lyrical abilities.  Trap Muzik is really dope because it’s before the whole nation and the pop world really got a hold of T.I.’s music.  He is still pretty underground as far as not catering to mainstream radio.  Trap Muzik has two joints produced by Kanye before he was Kanye, which is refreshing to hear as well.  He has the anthems that he is known for as well.  It’s just a reall well done album.  Today, I’m really feeling Look What I Got.  It’s one of the joints where, even if your rolling a 99 Civic or and 88 Corolla, you feel like your shit is on 24′s and your pockets are fatter than (insert a hefty person’s name here).  I want to make sure that all of you underground heads listen to Trap Muzik because T.I. can rap better than most of your favorite underground emcees.  If your worried about content, listen to Doin’ My Job produced by Kanye West.  I want to wish everyone a Happy Fly/Flannel Friday.  Me and Phys Edison are hitting the studio this evening to work on Paid Time Off.  Me and SLOT-A are in the studio Saturday working on Have You Seen My Stapler??  Also, I am dropping two remixes next Wednesday, so stay tuned.

Barrington Levy featuring Kardinal Offishall No War

I’m gonna start slapping people over the head with new shit constantly.  Time to get my blog game up.  Wait, nevermind, “we off that.”  I did just stumble across a really dope record/video from Barrington Levy featuring Kardinall Offishall called No War.  I’m pretty sure that I have heard this song before but I can’t remember where.  Anyway, they just dropped a new video and its pretty dope.  Kardinal always does his thing. I’m not sure why a legend like Barrington Levy needs to use autotune but whatever I guess.  Check out the video belooooooooooooooooooooow.

Speaking of “legends” using autotune, has anyone else seen/heard Flavor Flav’s video I’ll Never Let You Go????? Well if now, here it is!!!!!!!! Classic moment in hip hop.  What do you think is going through Chuck D’s mind right now??????

Big Pooh and Black Milk present The Purple Tape

I got some new more music for everyone for the third consecutive day.  This time Rapper Big Pooh and Black Milk dropped a project called The Purple Tape.  I’m not sure if Big Pooh is comparing his work to Raekwon’s or there is some other meaning but the collab sounding alright to me.  I’m not the biggest Big Pooh fan but he is a part of Little Brother so I typically listen to most of the music he releases.  With Black Milk involved, I figured this might be a solid project.  Big Pooh’s music is never bad but I typically find myself coming away with not much.  I listen for bars and wordplay and although Pooh isn’t necessarily a slouch, he just rarely impresses me.  His hooks are typically boring and his bars are pretty average.  Having said that, I thought Pooh sounded pretty good over some of the instrumentals.  I would definitely recommend downloading the “tape” especially for all you LB, Hall of Justus stans.  I just find myself missing Phonte and wishing Elzhi was on the Black Milk beats.

Please Pray

I try not to post things that I hear or ready quickly because I like to gather my thoughts so I can share my feelings in a composed manner.  I am sure everyone knows about the Earthquake tragedy in Haiti.  I received an email from my uncle who has been to Haiti over 30 times for mission trips and works very closely with different groups there.  The email said that their are anywhere from 10,000 to 500,000 thousand people dead.  I don’t watch the news very often because of all of the fucked up shit happening, maybe I am just turning a blind eye but this is one of the worst natural disasters in history.  In tragedies like this, we often find ourselves feeling helpless and guilty that we cannot offer any help or that we do not know how to help.  I fight with these feelings but still find myself doing nothing.  This disaster brings all those same feelings of helplessness and guilt.  I’m not sure what to tell people to do other than pray.  If you can offere any monetary help to a good organization, please, please, please do.  If you are part of a group that can go down there and help, please do.  I am sure anything you can do, even if you help one person or give one dollar, is more than nothing.  The world will be watching for the next several weeks but people need to understand much like Katrina and the Tsunami, these places will NEVER be the same and help isn’t needed for just 2 weeks while the news stories run.  Your continued support and prayer is needed.  My heart goes out to Haiti, all the families, friends and people affected by this tragedy.

I also wanted to send out my condolences to Teddy Pendergrass’ family and friends.  RIP Teddy P.
