DOA’s Real Effect

Jay-Z and T Pain

I just wanted to post a little update about the Jay-Z/Blueprint 3 saga.  I came across an article on hiphopdx about Jay-Z’s DOA effects on auto sales.  Well according to the company that created auto-tune, since DOA’s release, auto-tunes sales have actually increased.  hahaha.  Sorry I couldn’t help but laughing.  I know the purpose of the song was actually to just stop the auto-tune usage in mainstream hip hop so we will see what happens but it is kind of funny.  Auto-tune is pretty much a dead horse but of course Jay had to take credit for killing it.  Check the article on hiphopdx.

Jay-Z’s DOA Increases Auto-Tune Sales

Let’s not forget the BP3 was SUPPOSED to have auto-tune on it.  SMH.

Worker’s Comp

Mos Def

This is my first official broadcast live from the Jersey Shore.  Right now, I’m sitting at my step dad’s beach house and thanking my lucky stars that I don’t have to work for a week.  I was pleasantly surprised to read Large Marge’s post this morning.  I agree with him totally about Frakie Valli and The Four Seasons.  I used to bump and sing Sherry all the time.  Dude’s voice was incredible.  It’s a little hard for me to match his pitch now but I still try.  Field Mob is definitely an underrated group.  They were always different than anyone else and brought a fresh sound to hip hop.  They were no slouches on the mike either.  I’m glad Marge posted about them.  I was actually going through my Ipod the other day and came across their music.  Now I got to download all 3 of their albums.  I had high hopes from them when they signed with Ludacris and DTP.  They put out Light Poles and Pine Trees with DTP but didn’t see the type of success they should have.  Their lead single was So What featuring Ciara which actually featured a video model from my hometown, Topeka, Kansas.  Good shit Marge.  I haven’t had the chance to listen to a new album today but I have had Mos Def’s song, Worker’s Comp stuck in my head for 3 days.  Worker’s Comp is one of my favorite songs from The Ecstatic.  My only complaints is that it’s too short.  If you haven’t checked out The Ecstatic, I suggest you do so today.  It is an incredible album and will definitely be one of the best in 2009.  I will try to update the site as much as possible while I am on the Jersey Shore but I apologize if I leave everyone hanging.  I think you will be able to survive with all the classic material I have posted up until this point.  This would be a good time to dig through the archives of MikeSchpitz.com.  Happy Friday to everyone.  If you see me in the ocean on the boogie board today make sure you say hello.  Shout out to Large Marge for watching over my mom’s dog while we are on vacation.

A couple of thoughts..

Nothing serious here folks. Well, besides the quote.motivating-quoteJust going to mention a couple of artists/groups that I’ve been listening to A LOT today.  I don’t know if you’re familiar with the song Beggin’ by Madcon, which is a hip hop group out of Norway, but before Madcon there was this fantastic group called Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  This group together had over 25 top 40 hits with songs such as Walk Like A Man, Sherry and of course, Beggin.  Madcon’s version is not too bad considering it sounds like something the Roots could come up with, but the original is just so smooth and soulful that it is hard to oversee.  I can imagine myself at a sock hop doing the mash potato or something along those lines.  My father always gives me a hard time about music today by comparing it to his time and I have to agree that music back in the day seemed so pure.  There are, of course, groups that come out who can provide some ammo for my talks with dad, but most of the time I’m stuck agreeing with him.  Anyways, video to come later in the post.

The second part of my post has to deal with one of my favorite and most underrated groups, Field Mob.  I happen to believe that if it wasn’t for the politics of the hip hop business these guys would have made some real noise.  I just love the fact at any given moment they can surprise you with lyrics and a melodic almost out of control flow over a beat.  They had there first single, Tired of Being Lonely, which was probably to suffice the higher ups.  But seriously, a lot of there songs after that were completely overlooked and abandoned by most listeners(besides Georgia On My Mind).   As it is, Smoke inked with an Indie Label out in Arizona and has a solo album coming out in 2010.  Shawn Jay inked with Universal and is currently working on a solo album but no date has been announced for the release.

ALLright, here is Beggin’

And…..Porject Dreamz(from the first album 613 Ashy To Classy), why not.  It’s like a mix of Goodie Mob and Nappy Roots.

The “New” King of Pop

Kanye West

Man I bet this dude shops so much that he can speak Italian

I am sure you all have heard about Kanye’s recent comments about him being the “NEW” King of Pop since Michael Jackson has passed away but if not, here they are.

“You know everyone loves and respects Michael but times change. It’s so sad to see Michael gone but it makes a path for a new King of Pop and I’m willing to take that on. There’s nobody who can match me in sales and in respect so it only makes sense for me to take over Michael’s crown and become the new King.  First there was Elvis, then there was Michael, now in the 21st century its Kanye’s time to rule. I have nothing but respect for Michael but someone needs to pick up where he left off and there’s nobody better than me to do that. I am the new King of Pop.”

Now, I know I’m country and from Kansas but Kanye is either one of the dumbest smart people on the planet or he says shit just to say it.  I won’t recap all of his comments but there have been a number of ocassions where Kon The Louis Vuitton Don makes himself look like a fool.  Let me say that I am and have been a fan of Kanye’s music up until 808′s but shit like this makes me want to break all of his cds and never listen to him again.  Of course I wouldn’t expect anyone else to say some shit like this except Kanye but damn.  Did he really just compare himself to Elvis and Michael Jackson.  It’s hilarious that he said “I am willing to take that on” like he is doing everyone a favor for filling Michael Jackson’s socks.  C’mon Yeezy, you got so many things going for you right now including a terrible, pop album littered with horrible lyrics and terrible singing, two shoe deals with Nike and Louis and a bad-ass, bald headed woman that is fucking everyone else in the industry, don’t you think it’s time to fall back and keep the 80′s here as long as you can.  Now I think I have to go listen to College Dropout to remind me that Kanye is capable of doing something well.  Honestly thought, I think he just says shit to make people talk.  It is a beautiful marketing/PR scheme but he needs to be careful about what he says because MJ is the GOAT.  I doubt people will ever be touring Kanye’s home like Graceland or Neverland Ranch.  I would not like to hear anything else from Kanye until Good Ass Job comes out.  Let’s get back to the program Yeezy.

Deep Cover 98

Big Pun

“Dead in the middle of little Italy, little did we know that we riddle some middle men who didn’t do diddely”

Really Big Pun???????  Of course Deep Cover 98 had to be my joint of the day.   The first time I heard that shit, I ran it back like seven times just to get the lyrics down so I could rap that part all week.  I even called my mom and warned her that I would be saying those bars all vacation.  I can’t say that I even noticed when Fat Joe raps but he seems to do alright in the midst of Pun absolutely KILLING this joint.  I am a little confused however.  Did Dre give Pun and his label permission to use that joint for an album?  I know reggae/dancehall artists use the same beat all the time but I have rarely seen hip hop artists do it on albums, only on mixtapes.  My guess is that Dre heard Pun’s version and was like “YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA, you can use that shit.”  If you haven’t heard this joint, BOY, you are in for a pleasant surprise.  I got to say it again.  I’m sorry Pun for sleeping for way too damn long.  You are a legend and it is an absolute shame we lost you.  I mean, you made TS step up their game 1200%.  Now Fat Joe moved to Miami and does southern hip hop.  Which is not a bad thing, it’s just not a good thing for CRACK.  Today will be my last official day in Chicago for a week.  I will be lampin(never really knew what that meant) on the Jersey Shore.  Pray for good weather for me.  If you see me getting attacked by a dolphin or a crab, someone please help me.  I will try to keep up my daily posts but I can’t promise anything.  The ocean is a little more appealing than the internet even though I do love it here.  Enjoy hump day.  Enjoy some more Big Pun and don’t cry for me while I’m gone.

Stolen Headline: Apple and Labels HOPE to Change Buying Trends

Itunes

The key word is HOPE.  I saw this article on hiphopdx and had to throw in my 2(more like 12) cents.  I posted a little while back about artists and labels offering albums for the cheap like $2.99 or $1.99 and I wanted to address Apple and the record label’s “solution” to the slump in record sales.  Apparently, Apple has teamed up with some major labels to provide new incentives for consumers to encourage purchasing music digitally.  They are now going to offer lyric sheets, linear notes and photographs along with the music for purchase.  They are also going to make it so the music can be played directly from the “interactive book” without clicking back to Itunes software.  Sounds pretty awesome doesn’t it?  I know it makes me want to spend my money on an album that I can get for free 2 weeks before the release date.  I think it’s funny that as labels and Apple scrambles to combat declining record sales, Itunes decides to raise the prices of a lot of songs to $1.29 a piece.  As smart and as rich as these people at these labels and companies are, they just simply cannot grasp the concept of the digital music age.  I think all of these ideas are not bad but they are YEARS too late.  The record industry is simply REacting to a problem and not changing ahead of the times.  If Apple came out with Itunes right when Napster hit the scene and lowered album prices back then, I GUARANTEE they would have been more suited to deal with the issue now.  There is one point that people are simply overlooking.  People are NOT paying for music any more.  The fact that some artist sell a million albums in a week is incredible but if those sales were translated to back when records were selling, artists would be selling MILLIONS and MILLIONS of records.  I know for a fact that if labels would have dropped CD prices back in 2000 to 5 bucks or 3 bucks a CD, record sales would have been through the roof.  Now, they FINALLY realize that even selling one million records is a huge deal.  I bet money that if labels could track all of the illegal downloading, artists would triple and quadruple their numbers.  Imagine if labels just released the music for free and tracked all of the downloads.  The numbers would be astounding.  Simple selling linear notes and pictures and lyric sheets are not going to boost sales because all that shit will just be available for free as well.  I’m not saying that I agree with music being free because SOME artists do put years of blood, sweat and tears into albums and to simply give it away free is a slap in the face.  HOWEVER, it is the reality.  I think Radiohead offered the coolest and most innovative solution by giving their album away for whatever price people wanted to pay.  If someone wanted it free then they would have it but if a die hard fan wanted to drop 15 bucks then cool.  I know the lack of record sales creates lots of issues for labels and artists like no budgets for albums, no advances and limited promotion but it also brings music back to the fundamentals.  It’s just music.  There is a reason that people still listen to Slick Rick, The Pharcyde, Blackstar, The Chronic, etc.  Regardless of the amount of money put into the music, regardless of the advance the artists got and regardless of how many records they all sold, they have one thing in common: Their music(for the most part) is classic and timeless.  No one will be cranking the Soulja Boy 15 years from now but people will be listening to The Chronic and know the words to Lodi Dodi.  It will be interesting to see the label’s and Apple’s next step when they realize that linear notes and lyric sheets do not boost record sales.  I think it is an absolute joke that Itunes upped their prices as well.  It seems like these people have NO idea what is going on, on the internet.  I think artists don’t or shouldn’t expect large paychecks from album sales any more.  They should be more focused on maximizing the amount of people that hear the music and then hit the road and sell shit that you can’t bootleg.  Shit, give all the fans hugs before and after the shows, spark a blunt of with fans or invite some stans on a couple dates of the tour because that shit is priceless.  Damn, no one pass those ideas to labels or Apple because then record sales might actually go up.  Alright so enough rambling from me.  What are your guys thoughts?  Are their any solutions to the decline in record sales?  What “incentives” can labels offer fans to actually purchase the music?  One last shout out to Little Brother for leaking their last project by themselves.  Shout out to Radiohead for offering a cool solution as well.  Peep the article on hiphopdx as well as the original on Financial Times.

Sin Nombre

Sin Nombre

Since I watch a fair amount of movies, I am going to start getting me Ebert on and give brief little movie reviews/recommendation.  Music and movies go hand and hand.  Rappers think their lives are like movies and of course everyone who isn’t a rapper wants to be a rapper.  So last night, I watched Sin Nombre with my roommate.  She loves latin movies so I downloaded it in hopes that it would be good.  I read some good reviews and figured it would be worth a shot.  When I realized that it was about MS13, I KNEW it would be ill.  For all of you unfamiliar with MS13, do some research.  The movie basically journeys a family traveling from Honduras through Latin America to get to the US.  It also shows and MS13 member’s struggle with the gang and it’s brutal lifestyle.  The two parties intersect and so on and so on.  I don’t want to give too many details aside from the movie was really good.  I couldn’t imagine making that LONG ass trek just to get to the US.  Shit must be REALLY fucked up in other countries for people to travel so far and put their lives at risk.  I know a lot of “people” don’t like reading subtitles but regardless everyone should check out this movie just for tattoo face alone.  I couldn’t imagine waking up to dude looking at me with a creepy smile.  If your like me and have late fees with all of the movie rental stores, you can find Sin Nombre online for download or stream.  I definitely recommend it.  Here is a trailer for the movie as well.

Super Lyrical

Big Pun

So I decided that this week(because I slept for SO long) will be Big Pun week for me.  I have been bumping Capital Punishment nonstop and there are so many incredible songs, lyrics and quotables on there.  Pun definitely deserves(if not more) at least of week of my time.  I’m gonna grab Yeah Baby and Endangered Species tonight but for today and tomorrow, I am going to feature a couple more tracks from Capital Punishment.  If you couldn’t already guess, today’s joint is Super Lyrical featuring the most consistent emcee in hip hop, Black Thought.  Both cats kill the song.  This is actually the first track where I feel like Black Thought got outshined.  Having said that, he still kills it.  I am still pretty upset with myself for sleeping on Pun for this long but I’m trying to make up for lost time.  Happy Tuesday to all.  Enjoy some more Big Pun and make sure you go out and buy Capital Punishment or download it “legally” like me.  More on downloading and Itunes to come today.  Stay Tuned.  RIP Big Punisher.
